NCPA Mumbai India's premier art and culture institution

Inaugurated in 1969, the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA), Mumbai, is India’s premier cultural institution. The first multi-venue, multi-purpose cultural centre to be built in South Asia, it has been committed since its inception to promoting and preserving the country’s rich and vibrant traditions in music, dance and theatre, as well as catalyzing new and innovative work in the field of the performing arts. With five modern theatres, two galleries and extensive archival and library facilities located in the heart of Mumbai’s downtown business district, the NCPA presents more than 500 events each year across all major art forms. It is recognised by artists, patrons and the media alike to be among the world’s foremost venues for the performing arts.

On the birth anniversary of Dr. Jamshed Bhabha, we look back at the story of Tata Theatre, a space he envisioned as a home for the arts, designed to bring together artistes, audiences and music under one roof.

From its inauguration in 1980 to the countless performances and historic moments it has witnessed, Tata Theatre has remained an enduring part of the NCPA’s story.

Today, as the theatre enters a new chapter through its refurbishment, its original seats begin a journey of their own — donated to Topiwala National Medical College & B.Y.L. Nair Hospital, Vaikunthbhai Mehta Research Centre and Vishnudas Bhave Natyagruha, Sangli.

A piece of Tata Theatre’s history now moves beyond its walls, finding new homes and new stories.

Celebrating Dr. Jamshed Bhabha and a legacy that continues to move forward.

How many memories can a song hold? 🎶

The final evening of Bandish 2026 took us on a journey through the evolving soundscape of Hindi cinema. From K. L. Saigal and S. D. Burman to R. D. Burman, A. R. Rahman and Pritam.

With Sourendro–Soumyojit & Group, familiar melodies returned with new arrangements, a live orchestra and a whole lot of nostalgia.

And what a way to close Bandish 2026.
