Death of leather working school in Bombay
It’s heartbreaking to see the decline of leatherworking schools in Mumbai, a city once renowned for its masterful artisans. These schools, vital in preserving and nurturing the craft, are dwindling even as the luxury industry increasingly values and demands authentic leatherwork. The loss of these institutions erodes a rich cultural heritage and also dims the future of countless aspiring artisans. Let’s raise awareness and support the revival of this invaluable tradition!

MIMESIS 24

Mimesis emerges as a residue and extension of the artist duo Thukral and Tagra’s recent series of works,
Arboretum, a contemplation on communities of trees. Like the seedlings, these fragmented
canvases with coloured pixels embark on an infinite journey of visualising data as an artistic endeavour.

For the India Art Fair 15th edition, they imagined units, as a collection in terms of date, time,
artwork, audiences, artists and patrons. In synch with the sustainable
practices of the changing world, the material residues of these large-scale facades
are repurposed into handbags in conversation with CHAMAR.

KOTHI
First group show, aequo presents a series of design prototypes and experimental craftsmanship collaborations. Kothi is curated as a residential mise-en-scène within Colaba gallery and features the work of six designers Valériane Lazard, Chamar, Wendy Andreu, Frédéric Lambert, Cedric Courtin and Florence Louisy. Through a global perspective on India's artisanal heritage, the spectrum of craft at every level is explored, with traditionally prized workmanship exhibited alongside more humble handmade techniques. The exceptional skills of karigars from Mumbai.
In this intimate setting, intended to feel like the home of a collector, raw objects that are still in-process sit confidently next to impeccably finished pieces of collectible furniture. Even material is exhibited democratically the recycled rubber of studio Chamar elevated with a new preciousness when seen side-by-side the embroidery of Vastrakala.

POCKET CHAIR _ Amongst languages on the Indian subcontinent ‘Kursi’ is a word borrowed from Arabic for the chair. The use of seated furniture in art history specially in Indian Miniatures is depicted as a pedestal throne for the divinity often called a ‘Singhasan’ or a ‘Tiger Throne ‘ . The Mughals popularised the use of raised chairs but the use of occidental furniture in secular use and in the vernacular came with colonisation specially the Portuguese. The words for table and window in Indian Languages come from Lusitane heritage . Today ‘Kursi ‘ has a synonym with power and Studio Chamar deconstructs a pocket as a sculpture that is draped in Blue on a steel frame . The ‘mashaal’ or the fire-torch inspires the ‘sleeve’ , but as sculpture it takes form of the cotton long sleeve worn by many workers . So are the hues of Blue , Black and Red in recycled natural rubber used for their socio-political contexts that contextualise the studio’s ethos . Sudheer Rajbhar does not see them as objects of utility rather he seeks a resonance in sculpture .
