Painting ceramics with acrylics is one of the most challenging and relaxing part of jewellery making process. Each texture and design calls out the way it wants to be painted- different tool, different technique even if it’s from same colour.

4 step process to make

Each steps takes hours of human intervention and days of nature intervention- expanding the process to atleast a week before a finished piece is available.

Add to this many design failures, slow carving or texturing or painting to ensure a fine finish.

Making the nearly 200 smaller beads first

1. Roll the clay cylinder next to a ruler scale
2. Cut into segments of desired width. To ensure that each bead is of same size, this is a crucial step. All segments need to be of same width/size
3. Each clay cylinder gives multiple segments. Cover with a damp cloth
4. Roll each segment into spheres. The quality of rolling ensures uniform round shape. Misshapen spheres are a waste of effort.
5. Cover the spheres with a damp cloth
6. Next make holes in the spheres. This gives a bead. A blunt needle is a good tool for the small beads
7. Made 25 beads today. Kept aside for drying

Posting a "how to" series on this simple and much loved elegant bead necklace.

This necklace involves nearly 250 handrolled beads in 2 different sizes ( approximate 40 beads in one size and rest in another).
It's important to get near identical beads for a great finish

Clay is first drawn into near identical multiple cylinders. This helps cut the clay into segments of equal size which in turn helps to make beads which are near identical. More on this tomorrow:)

It's good to make all cylinders together from same batch of Clay to ensure same moisture content and shrinkage in beads

The clay here is already prepared with necessary wedging and kneading and moisture
