Our Story
The mission to save Indian languages, using literature as the platform. Reading & Discussion of Indian Language Literature | Founded by Jameel Gulrays The signature programmes of Katha Kathan are the dramatised reading of Indian language literature on stage, captivating audiences and taking them on a journey of vivid imagination. We bring alive the work of some of the greatest poets and authors from across languages. On a smaller scale is Katha Kathan Baithak, an open-for-all platform, for anyone who wishes to join our movement to save Indian Languages and its literature. Held on the first Saturday of every month, we not only have a lot of new listeners coming to get a personalised reading experience, but also a lot of new talent that is writing and wishes to share this writing with a larger audience. You can catch us as we go Live on Facebook as it happens. You can also keep-in-touch with Katha Kathan on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCxwkaqhlLvBs-5kgKQXNnOQ ), Facebook, Twitter (@Katha_Kathan) and Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/?hl=en )or mail us on [email protected] About the Facilitator - From writing advertising copy including "Bottal mein aam, Maaza hain naam", “Taaza mango, Maaza mango”, “Lime-n-Lemoni Limca”, “Toh phir kyon na khaye Amul Chocolates", to coining phrases like "Ziddi mael" to adapting English programmes of Animal Planet, Discovery, Travel & Living etc to Hindustani, to penning Advertising’s one and only book in Hindi- 'Vigyapanon ki Duniya', it’s been a long journey of love for language, for Jameel. But way above this love, is his passion for Urdu, which translates into an enviable collection of Urdu poetry and literature in his library. Mir, Zauq, Zafar, Chakbast, Dagh, Faiz, Iqbal, Parveen Shakir, Firaq, Hali, Ghalib… or Manto, Chugtai, Krishen Chander, Premchand… take your pick of poets or storytellers and he can recite their work from memory. Katha Kathan started off as his ‘mission’ to preserve and reignite the love for the rich and beautiful Urdu language and its literature. And what better to do this than keep it in an easy, searchable format online… thus came about his You Tube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCxwkaqhlLvBs-5kgKQXNnOQ However, it wasn’t long before this mission extended to encompass all other Indian languages, as the problem was the same everywhere… Indian Languages have lost the pride of place in India and more and more people have stopped reading and writing in their native tongue. It’s a question of time before our languages become mere dialects, and so Katha Kathan is on this arduous but satisfying journey to keep alive language by reintroducing the writers and the rich literature they created over the past 100-150 years.
