A tribute to Madden was shown on Las Vegas Raiders home Allegiant Stadium.

Legendary coach and broadcaster John Madden died Tuesday morning, the NFL announced. For fans, no one is more synonymous with football than Madden, and perhaps no one person has done more to bring new people into the game.

“On behalf of the entire NFL family, we extend our condolences to Virginia, Mike, Joe and their families,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in an official statement. “We all know him as the Hall of Fame coach of the Oakland Raiders and broadcaster who worked for every major network, but more than anything, he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

“Nobody loved football more than Coach. He was football. He was an incredible sounding board to me and so many others. There will never be another John Madden, and we will forever be indebted to him for all he did to make football and the NFL what it is today.”

A late draft pick, Madden’s NFL stint was set to start in 1958 with the Philadelphia Eagles, but a career-ending knee injury sidelined him before his professional gridiron days started. Madden moved into coaching, beginning at a community college. He ended up in Oakland, bringing home a Lombardi Trophy and becoming the winningest coach in Raiders history. Madden had secured his spot as one of the greatest coaches of his era before stepping down to become a broadcaster. On TV, Madden excelled as well, becoming one of the most memorable and enjoyable color commenters. He won 16 Emmy Awards before retiring in 2008.

As a kid, of course I remember him from Monday Night Football, but Madden was this larger than life figure. He’d pop up in hardware store ads and beer commercials. You’d spot him in random music videos or on The Simpsons. He was this jovial character of Americana who was afraid of flying but loved football dearly. For me and many others, his greatest cultural achievement was Madden NFL.

I didn’t play 1988’s John Madden Football, but remember seeing the box art in shops, featuring Madden bursting through a chalkboard, football in hand, with a big grin on his face. I did buy John Madden Football two years later on the Genesis. Compared to every other football game—heck, compared to every other sports game I had played at the time, it was a revelation. The Madden games not only featured his voice and likeness, but they oozed his personality. Yet, the appeal was more than that: It’s important that the debut game’s box art showed Madden breaking through a chalkboard covered with plays. As amusing as I found the ambulance driving on the field, these games were about learning to execute strategy and tactics. They struck at the very core of football.

A Super Bowl win can help build a franchise or establish a dynasty. Lively color commentary provides insight in the game and becomes soundbites for highlight reels. It’s hard to measure the impact of Madden NFL. The games became a way for people not only to play a virtual version of football, but develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of the game. I’m from the generation grew up on Madden—but now, it seems like every generation does. Even if you never saw him coach or broadcast, if you’ve ever played a football video game, you’ve been impacted by John Madden. And for that, we thank him.

vivo sub-brand iQOO yesterday announced it will introduce the iQOO 9 series on January 5 while also revealing the smartphone’s design and a few specs. Today, the company took to Weibo to tell us more about the battery tech.

iQOO says the iQOO 9 series will pack a 4,700 mAh battery and feature 120W wired and 50W wireless charging. However, only the Pro version will support wireless charging, which isn’t a surprise since the iQOO 8 Pro also came with 50W wireless charging but the regular iQOO 8 didn’t.

iQOO also doesn’t explicitly mention which variant will ship with a 4,700 mAh battery, but it’s safe to say it will be the iQOO 9 Pro which will be fueled by this cell, while the vanilla iQOO 9 will have a smaller battery.

The poster shared by iQOO also confirms the presence of a USB-C port at the bottom, with the SIM card slot and microphone on the left side. The opposite side is less likely to have a 3.5mm headphone jack since the previous two generations also didn’t feature a headphone jack.

In a separate post, iQOO said that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC on the iQOO 9 series will be paired with an “enhanced version” of LPDDR5 and an “overclocking version” of UFS 3.1 storage. But it didn’t provide us any numbers for either.

Moreover, the company said that the iQOO 9 lineup will have a VC three-dimensional heat dissipation heat system onboard with an area of 3926 mm2.

iQOO 9 series features

Previously, iQOO confirmed that the iQOO 9 series will feature a 2K E5 AMOLED screen and sport a triple camera system headlined by a 50MP sensor with OIS.

You can expect iQOO to reveal a few more features of the iQOO 9 series in the days leading to its January 5 launch event.

Blockchain data research firm Arcane Research has taken a look at the year that was in its final report for 2021 and offered its predictions for crypto markets going into 2022.

Arcane’s Dec. 28 The Weekly Update report focuses on Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) but delves into other major coins, decentralized finance (DeFi), meme coins, nonfungible tokens (NFT), derivatives, and others. Arcane offered a prediction for what would happen in 2022 on every topic covered in the report.

“Bitcoin will outperform the S&P 500 in 2022.”

The report noted that through 2021, Bitcoin has outperformed the S&P 500 index. Bitcoin is up 73% while the S&P 500 is up 28% this year, and Arcane believes Bitcoin will continue this performance next year. The benchmark S&P 500 index consists of the 500 biggest companies listed on American stock exchanges.

“XRP and Cardano will fall out of the top 10”

Arcane noted the tremendous gains on Binance Coin (BNB) this year, peaking at about 1600% in May and rounding out the year up 1344%. Based on this and the growth in market cap from alts like Solana and Terra, along with the NFT craze, the analysts are tipping Ripple (XRP) and Cardano (ADA) will exit the top-10 list.

Alternate layer-ones will continue to outperform ETH.

While ETH outperformed BTC this year with a gain of 455% to 73%, other layer-one blockchains outperformed ETH. Layer-one refers to standalone, base layer blockchains. Terra Luna ends 2021 up 14,823%, Fantom is up 13,549%.

Traditional gaming companies will increasingly add NFTs

This year in crypto can be defined in no small part by the massive sales of NFTs, and blockchain games like Splinterlands and Alien Worlds have around 526,000 daily active users according to DappRadar. Arcane predicts that in 2022, traditional gaming brands will branch into the NFT space and capitalize on the burgeoning market.

Even more crypto companies will go public and several will have valuations above $5B.

This year saw Coinbase go public on April 14th and it currently has a market cap of $72 billion. The five biggest crypto company public listings slated for 2022 are all currently valued over $1 billion. Arcane believes there will be a numbe others valued higher than $5 billion like crypto exchange Bullish, which is currently valued at $9 billion.

Bitcoin ETFs will hold more than 1M BTC by end of 2022

Several Bitcoin futures exchange-traded funds (ETF) were launched in 2021. They currently collectively hold about 846,309 BTC and Arcane says the growth will only continue in 2022.

“Hashrate will become even more geographically distributed”

When China banned Bitcoin mining, global Bitcoin hashrate sharply fell, then nearly as suddenly recovered. Now the United States leads the world in hashrate, followed by Kazakhstan and Russia. Arcane believes miners will disperse even further into regions like Latin America.

The Knicks are looking to turn their season around after winning back-to-back games for the first time since late October, beating the Timberwolves in Minnesota, 96-88.

Led by Mitchell Robinson’s 14 points and 18 rebounds (season-high), the Knicks showed some grit in holding off the Timberwolves who were trying to claw back a 17-point deficit.

New York hadn’t won consecutive games since beating the Pacers on October 31, which marked the end of a three-game winning streak at the time.

The Knicks now move to 16-18 on the season, and despite being tenth in the Eastern Conference, lie just one and a half games back of the Wizards in eighth, and two full games back of the 76ers in the sixth seed. This is telling given how many games lost to injury and COVID-19 the Knicks have had to endure this season.

They’ve had seven players in protocols this season, compared to last season when Derrick Rose was the only player who spent extended time out of action due to Health and Safety Protocols.

Now without Derrick Rose (ankle injury) – arguably their most important player this season, it’s going to take a continued team effort, like the one against Minnesota where five players scored in double-digits, to climb back up the standings.

If the Knicks are going to salvage their season, this might be the stretch to start doing so. The schedule is working in their favor.

Nine of their next ten games are against opponents with a record below .500. Last season’s run into the playoffs, where the Knicks entered as a fourth seed, was in part fueled by a late-season stretch in which the Knicks went 16-4 to close out the season.

The difference this season is that they’ll have to do it without Derrick Rose who is out until at least mid-February recovering from ankle surgery, but Kemba Walker is back in the lineup and looking like the four-time All-Star player from his past averaging 22.8 points and six assists in the past five games.

“He’s being very aggressive, which is the way we want him to play. He’s not deferring at all,” said Knicks’ coach Tom Thibodeau.

Julius Randle looked like the player that was an All-Star and All-NBA just one season ago during the Christmas Day game against Atlanta, and he will need to continue to be that player and not the one who went 5-of-20 from the field against Minnesota, for the Knicks to have any chance of making a playoff run.

The next ten games will tell us a lot about the 2021-22 New York Knicks.

Bitcoin’s market dominance has continued to fall, bottoming out below 40% this week. That’s very close to the all-time low of 36.7% in Jan 2018 according to data from Tradingview.

Bitcoin (BTC) market dominance refers to the ratio between BTC’s market cap and the total crypto market cap.

It’s not the first time dominance has dipped in 2021. Back in May, Cointelegraph reported that BTC had dipped to represent just 40.3% of the combined crypto asset capitalization, according to Coinmarketcap, and it neared the same level again in September.

Bitcoin critic and Europac chairman Peter Schiff tweeted about the event on Dec 29th, saying that it’s indicative that BTC is “losing its first-mover competitive advantage.”

With over 16,000 alternative cryptos to choose from Bitcoin’s market dominance is now below 40% for the first time since June of 2018. With an unlimited supply of easily created cryptos with virtually identical properties, is losing its first-mover competitive advantage.

— Peter Schiff () December 28, 2021

Research published by TradingPlatforms on Dec 27 stated that the data may signal an incoming “alt season”. Over the last seven years, altcoin market dominance has increased threefold from 21% in 2014 to around the 60% mark this month.

Ethererum’s (ETH’s) market dominance continues to sit above 20% at almost $500 billion. Over the past year, ETH’s market dominance has doubled from 10%.

In a Dec 24 tweet, Crypto analyst “Altcoin Sherpa” claimed that the “alt season” has already been underway for an entire year. They referenced a chart tracking BTC’s market dominance, suggesting that the downward trend may continue.

: Mini thread here on ‘wen ‘. Alt season has been going on for an entire year, you just haven’t noticed it. Here’s the dominance chart- you can see alts have flourished since January 2021. $BTC $ETH pic.twitter.com/c2w1PjHrqV

It remains to be seen if institutional investment will help put a floor under the dominance metric. In a Dec 28 interview with CNBC, Genesis Trading’s head of market insights Noelle Acheson said that she could see “strong signs” of institutional crypto investment growth accelerating during 2022.

She said that the amount of institutional investment growth in the crypto space over the last 12 months “has been astonishing.”

Related: Bitcoin dominance on the rise once again as crypto market rallies

Back in October, analysts from international banking giant JPMorgan stated that the BTC rally at the time was being fueled by an increased appetite from institutional investors. They claimed that “institutional investors appear to be returning to Bitcoin, perhaps seeing it as a better inflation hedge than gold.”

According to on-chain data from Glassnode, although BTC’s short-term supply has decreased by 32%, long-term holders added 16% to their treasuries during 2021.

Samsung is expected to announce the long-delayed Galaxy S21 FE next month, though conflicting reports have us guessing the launch will take place either during (January 3 or 4) or shortly following CES 2022 (January 11). A customer has already been able to purchase the unreleased phone at a retailer in South Africa.

Reddit user u/UnknownWon posted several nuggets of useful information that most of us get to benefit from. The user posted an unboxing video that shows the initial setup of the S21 FE, and we can spot the slim box that omits the charger.

More recently, u/UnknownWon posted a mini review of the phone, confirming that the phone has a 4,500 mAh battery that supports Fast Charging and Fast Wireless Charging as per the settings menus. He also suggests that the phone suffers from a green tint but bases this off the comparison of the display on his Poco X3. He mentions there’s no way to manually adjust the white balance of the display.

u/UnknownWon also expressed that the phone’s hardware feels “lighter”, “comfortable” and “premium” compared to his Poco X3 – which feels “sticky” and “cheap” by comparison. The triple cameras also appear to use the same sensors as those from the S20 FE.

Another thing that the customer posted about in the Reddit thread was that the in-display fingerprint scanner was optical versus the S21 series’ ultrasonic sensors. Also, the phone comes with 6GB of RAM, and the dualSIM variant in his region came with a Snapdragon 888 chipset and not the Exynos 2100 from the other S21 models in that region. We wonder if Samsung would release a 4G-only version powered by Exynos as it did with the S20 FE.

Finally, the reviewer posted a few sample photos shot with the S21 FE and they can be seen here. There’s at least one sample for each camera.

As per previous reports and leaks, the Galaxy S21 FE will have a 6.41-inch AMOLED screen, and the selfie camera will be updated to a 32MP module. The phone will be available in Olive, Black, White, and Purple options with an expected starting price of $699.

Lakers superstars LeBron James and Russell Westbrook have rewritten the history books once again.

Both members of the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team, James and Westbrook joined another exclusive list: teammates to record a triple-double in the same game. In the Lakers’ 132-123 win over the Rockets on Dec. 28, James finished with 32 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists while Westbrook finished with 24 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists.

It’s no surprise to see either of the two record a triple-double, as it was the 102nd career triple-double for James while Westbrook, the league’s all-time leader in triple-doubles, recorded triple-double No. 191 in the game.

It is, however, very rare to see two teammates record a triple-double in the same game. How rare? This marks just the 13th time in the NBA’s 75-year history that it has happened.

While triple-doubles are becoming more common, James and Westbrook are just the fourth pair of teammates to do so in the last four seasons, with Adebayo and Butler doing so twice.

This marks the second time James appears on the list as he and Ball achieved the feat as teammates in a win over the Hornets in 2018.

With the win, the Lakers moved to 17-18 on the season, snapping a five-game skid. James’ 32-point performance marks his fifth consecutive game with over 30 points, an impressive feat that comes just two days before his 37th birthday.

Real Vision CEO Raoul Pal believes the recent volatility in the Bitcoin price is due to institutions selling to help shore up their end-of-year profits,

The perennial Bitcoin (BTC) bull told Vlad from The Stakeborg Talks in a Dec. 27 interview that he believes the market is currently lopsided due to the effect of institutions. Pal said that they have been selling to lock in their profits. It was a way for institutions to say “I believe in getting paid.”

answers fast. Not this time. He needed 6 seconds before answering “Why is so sexy” but the answer was brilliant.

Considering that much of the selling in December has come from wallets that accumulated Bitcoin around the summer according to Glassnode, and that institutional assets under management (AUM) of cryptocurrency surged in May and Oct. according to Coinshares, the timing of the selling indeed points to institutions unloading some bags.

“Now the question is, ‘Are they done?’” asked Pal.

“It looks like they’re done because the market has been chopping around for the past week, which was the traditional last week of everybody squaring their books.”

While he predicts that there could be further selling out of Asia, Pal expects 2022 to begin with a strong start for the crypto markets as the capital from institutions gets redeployed.

Pal believes that institutional investors will become increasingly bullish on cryptocurrency through 2022 as they begin to better understand the ever increasing adoption of the technology “and therefore what that implies in market cap” by the end of the decade.

Noelle Acheson from Genesis Trading shares Pal’s insights on institutional bullishness on crypto going into 2022. She discussed institutional trends from 2021 and pointed out some potential highlights for 2022 on CNBC’s Squawk Box today.

“The institutional growth over the past 12 months has been astonishing and we’re seeing strong signs of that accelerating through next year both through direct investment and through investment in crypto market infrastructure companies themselves.”

Bitcoin is currently down about 3.5% over the past 24 hours and trading at $47,954 at the time of writing.
