An active, electric and luminous force; our Atash is a living flame of Zoroastrianism and commands an exalted throne in Zarthoshti ceremonies.
This painting depicts the purification of the ‘Atash nu Khwan’; a square stone slab on which stands the Afarganyu with the Fire. The chief officiating priest first cleans both hands with pav (purified) water. Reciting a formula of prayers offering homage to the Fire, he washes the stone moving from south, then west, north and returning to face the east. His pav hand is immersed into the pot to hold and lift it, while water is poured. The act is undertaken at the beginning of the Vendidad ceremony and a few other inner liturgical rites.
This ritual has been performed by generations of mobeds for millennia. Their ever-burning flame of faith keeping alive our sacred Zarthoshti Atash, is an admirable commitment.
This 18” x 24” Watercolour painting is a part of my ongoing series 'Soul of Fire'. Through art I hope to capture, appreciate and celebrate the quintessential essence of our illustrious and eclectic Zoroastrian community which has been thriving in India for centuries.

This painting is a Nowroz wish; May you celebrate many moments that prompt the riotous delight of twirling to the 'birdie dance'.
The birdie dance, almost a norm at Navjotes and Weddings, is a surrender to unrestrained joy for all generations. And perhaps that's a fitting sentiment to welcome the blossoms of spring.

The ‘Parsi Gate’, erected over a century ago has two five-metre high stone columns with elaborately carved Zoroastrian motifs. Here, Parsis will celebrate Ava roj, Ava Mahino in ten days with lively festivities.
These columns predate the construction of Marine Drive. They were built by philanthropists Pallonji Mistry and Bhagojisheth Keer in 1915, Since then, descending the few stone steps, generations of Mumbaikars have made offerings to the sea.
The Heritage Grade IIA structure was relocated about 75 metres away from the original site due to the construction of the coastal road. Conservation experts had dismantled the pillars by separating each stone ridge. The over five-ton pillars were reassembled at the new location. Plaques at the base of the pillars highlight the religious and cultural heritage.

There comes a day when milk teeth fall off, when your very own full patru is served and when a lifelong stand is taken for a bright red raspberry bubbly. That moment on, every patru sparks deep thoughts over surrendering to the temptation of second helpings.

‘Achoo meecho’ – diligently performed by the lady of the house to ward off evil and invite auspiciousness; by rotating miscellaneous items a specific number of times.
Obviously when grandmothers are at the helm, kids ought to mischievously confuse them into miscounting and restarting the rotations.
And it is mandatory to cheer when the coconut breaks on first impact with the ground; a feat possible only with practiced skill.

Rustom Faramna Agiary, built in 1928 will complete a century within the next few years. Dominating a corner of the crossroads at the Muncherji Joshi Parsi Colony in Dadar, it is easily one of the most recognised Fire Temples of Old Bombay. An ornate entrance gate, manicured garden, steps stamped with chalk (rangoli) and the tree hugged enclave lends to the charm of this heritage architecture.
Consecrated on Roj Adar Mah Avan, it was built when philanthropist and hotelier Rustom Faramna purchased the land to construct the Agiary in possibly the largest Parsi housing colony. After it was restored, in 2003 the Fire Temple won the Indian Heritage Society’s ‘Urban Heritage Award’.
