My husband and I are in a *heated* debate, and I need you all to settle this once and for all.
We’ve been renovating our 1920s house for the past two years, and this archway transformation has sparked the biggest fight we’ve had since disagreeing about bedroom paint colors.
Originally, the archway had this gorgeous rustic wood frame—thick, dark beams that added so much character. I found the inspiration on the Tedooo app from a woman who does incredible woodwork, and even got her custom stain. We spent three weekends installing those beams and added my uncle’s carved fish as the centerpiece. I LOVED it.
But my husband kept complaining: “It’s too dark. It makes the space feel smaller. Too rustic for our style.” On and on and on.
Then last month, while I was visiting my sister, he “surprised” me. I came home to find him with a ladder and power tools, ripping out all that beautiful woodwork. Just… gone. Back to a plain, boring archway.
He’s standing there, all proud, saying, “Look how much brighter it is! So clean and open!” Meanwhile, I’m staring at this basic builder-grade opening thinking… did we just go backward?
Now he insists this plain version is “timeless and clean,” while I think we’ve stripped away every bit of character and turned it into every basic house in America.
We argued for two hours straight. He’s like, “See how much bigger it looks? So bright and airy!” And I’m yelling, “WE HAD CHARACTER! WE HAD PERSONALITY! NOW IT LOOKS LIKE A RENTAL PROPERTY AGAIN!”
He thinks the wood was too overwhelming. I think THIS is overwhelming in its complete lack of soul.
So here we are. The wood beams are gone (RIP my beautiful archway), and I’m staring at this plain opening wondering if we just made the biggest mistake of our renovation.
Please tell me: the rustic wood version or this “clean” version? Should I make him put those beams back, or accept that sometimes husbands *do* know what they’re talking about?
