In India where menstruation is a taboo, a whole state( Odisha) celebrates it in a traditional way called raja festival. In west bengal we also celebrate it on the occasion of Ambubachi tithi.
Here the vibrant red colour denotes the purity, the power , the auspiciousness and the divine strength.
Raja word comes from the Sanskrit word Rajaswala.This unique festival honours the beginning of womanhood and menstruation cycle of mother earth.It is a three days festival- pahili raja, raja Sankranti,basi raja,and fourth day is basumati snana as it is believed that after completion of three days menstruation period woman do bathing and purification,marking her readiness for daily activities.
From alta painted feet to poda pitha , from swings to rest , from silence to rest women celebrate their womanhood in pride.
