Artist Process Series #6: Artists Gautam and Nitin walk us through their process of drawing a well-known flour mill in Khorlim, Mapusa, a drawing they have worked on together.

For Gautam, who grew up in Khorlim, the mill is deeply personal. He remembers being sent by his mother to get grain pounded, the rhythm and sound of the machines woven into everyday neighbourhood life. Nitin shares similar memories of visiting local mills growing up in Goa, once a common feature across neighbourhoods, and though fewer today, still very much in use.
In this drawing, recollection meets observation and documentation. The reel traces their process from early conceptual sketches to the development of the final line work, as they speak about both the emotional and technical decisions behind the piece.

This is part of our ongoing series on the making of the Mapusa Mogi Mural, where each artist shares their process of transforming Mapusa’s spaces and histories into drawings that will soon find their place on the wall.

series . After different types of attempts including high tech options, we settled on a detailed process to mark the holes in the wall. There are over a hundred holes that are weep holes and are required for the drainage of water . This process also led us to create our own stencils and tools to mark the holes to achieve millimetric precision. Longer detailed video out on Youtube soon!

How Christmas was celebrated in Mapusa in December, 2025! It began at the Market, with vendors setting up their stalls in the front alleyway, filling it with festive decor and sweets that people eagerly await. People come together to decorate their homes and streets with beautiful paper stars and other decorations. It is a festival of togetherness, celebrating the coming of Jesus into the lives of the faithful, and this is reflected in the nativity scenes put up all over the city. The faithful gather in prayer for the midnight mass and sing glory to God. Christmas is a syncretic festival enjoyed by all, and Mapusa is a fine example of this. From the market to the church, the festival comes alive visually.

Caption: The Artists Process Series #5 - Artist Cornelia Sequiera, a lifelong Mapusa resident, shares the process behind her drawing of the Easter Mass at St. Jerome’s Church. Drawing from memory and lived experience, she reflects on the tradition of the mass, the form of the gathering, and what she observes year after year, before translating elements such as the lighting of the Pascal candle and the church choir into beautifully composed drawings for the Mapusa Mogi mural.

The Process Series #4 - Artist Manuela Mendonça Gomes ( ) takes us through her process of drawing the Alankar theatre night food stalls, a space that comes alive after dark in Mapusa. She reflects on the atmosphere, the people who gather there, and the sensory details that shaped her interpretation for the Mapusa Mogi mural. It offers a glimpse into how observation, memory, and place come together in her drawing. Fun fact : The older market used to exist in his square as well!

Have you eaten at these stalls? If you’ve got any interesting stories or facts to share about the night market, write to us via the comments!

In our mural, fragments of Goa’s past find new form. Here, artist and craftsperson Guido ( ) talks about the process of making a relief model of the Caminhão, the iconic bus that once rumbled through Goan roads from the 1930s to the 60s. Now long gone, this bus will make a come back as a sculptural memory embedded within the Mapusa Mogi Mural.

Our documentation of Mapusa right from the research to the final artworks is quite detailed . Here is how we breakdown the process into different stages and execute to not only depict what is currently there, but also to envision the city in new forms and views. Our artist takes us through this process showing us one tiny part of a much larger plan for the city.
