شکوہ ۔ اقبال | शिकवा - इक़बाल
‘Shikwa’ was penned by Iqbal in 1903
It was a complaint to God about the grim situation of believers despite their steadfast righteousness.
The work instantly created a furore with certain religious bodies classifying it as blasphemous and even asking for strict sanctions against Iqbal.
Few years later Shikwa was followed by ‘Jawab e Shikwa’, a befitting response penned by Iqbal on behalf of God to the believers.
The duo ‘shikwa’ and ‘jawab-e-shikwa’ have been immensely popular for almost a century now with Urdu enthusiasts in the Indian subcontinent for its rich and perfectly rhythmic style as well as historical significance.
Throughout history there are many renditions mostly by qawwals. This is a humble attempt to capture the first part i.e. Shikwa in a way that listeners can enjoy the lyrical grandeur without getting too lost in musical instruments.
Allama Iqbal’s other famous works include ‘Tarana-e-hind’ or ‘Saare Jahan se Achha Hindustan hamara'. An abridged version is sung and played frequently as a patriotic song and as a marching song of the Indian Armed Forces
