Lai-laaj a musical stage play staged on 19 April 2026, at Kala Mandir in Kolkata in collaboration with Roopkatha Rangmanch with Anamika Kala Sangam.

In conversation with Pankaj Tripathi as he reflects on his early days with theatre, the discipline and grounding that theatre gave him, and how Kolkata became more than just a city, it became a space of learning, struggle, and belonging.

We also speak about the importance of institutions like Anamika Kala Sangam that continue to create platforms for performing arts, bringing stories, artists, and audiences together, and why these spaces are essential for culture to stay alive, relevant, and accessible.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of Asha Bhosle.

An era feels like it has quietly come to a pause. Born on 8th September 1933, in Sangli, Maharashtra, she began singing at a very young age, carrying forward not just a family legacy, but creating a legacy of her own. Over seven decades, she recorded more than 12,000 songs, in multiple languages, touching hearts far beyond borders.

From classical compositions, to playful cabaret numbers, from haunting ghazals, to modern experimental sounds, there was nothing her voice could not hold. Her collaborations with great composers like O. P. Nayyar and R. D. Burman gave Indian cinema some of its most unforgettable melodies. Songs such as “Piya Tu Ab To Aaja,” “Dum Maro Dum,” “Chura Liya Hai Tumne,” and “In Aankhon Ki Masti,” are not just songs, they are emotions stitched into time.

She was honoured with the Padma Vibhushan, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, and several National Film Awards, but beyond recognition, she earned something far greater, love that crossed generations.

Though a voice may fall silent, its echo does not fade. It lingers, in radios, in rehearsals, in memories, in moments when a song suddenly takes us back. What she gifted to Bollywood, and to the world, is timeless, a treasure that future generations will continue to cherish.

May her soul rest in peace. Her melody will remain, forever.
