Coming from a family of artists, writers, dancers and singers, Shanu Lahiri (neΓ© Majumdar) emerged from a distinguished cultural milieu of mid-century Calcutta, to step into an independent artistic life of her own. She was among the first few women students at the Government School of Art, Calcutta, (from where she graduated in 1951) who went on to pursue successful professional careers in art. Developing a diverse pictorial repertoire and a signature modernist style, and a parallel flair for writing and illustrating, Shanu Lahiri stood out in her time in many ways. With a flying start to her exhibition career, while she was still at the art school, Lahiri went on to have multiple exhibitions across India, U.S.A. and Canada over the next few decades, signposted by her first and last solo exhibitions in 1950 and 2012. Her interest in the artistic repertoire of the French β€˜high modern’ came to fruition upon receiving the French government scholarship to study painting and art-appreciation at AcadΓ©mie Julian and Γ‰cole de Louvre in 1956. In 1983, Lahiri was involved in setting up the first women’s art collective in the country, based in Calcutta, called β€˜The Group’. The 1980s also witnessed the artist initiating a series of public art projects on the streets of Calcutta in collaboration with art graduates, co-workers and different community members. One encounters Lahiri in the role of art pedagogue and administrator in the late β€˜70s and β€˜80s when she joined Rabindra Bharati University as Professor of Painting, and retired as Dean, Faculty of Visual Arts.

Till the end of her life, she remained committed to her art practice, to a collaborative vision of art making translating into diverse public art projects, and ebullient in her zest for life.
