Founded in 2004 by Reena and Abhijit Lath, Akar Prakar traces its roots to a family of Indian modern and contemporary art collectors, spanning three generations. Engaging in transcultural histories through collaborations with international museums and curators, Akar Prakar has created a space for indigenous representations from Indian modern and contemporary artists. Operating between its two gall

eries, in Kolkata and New Delhi, Akar Prakar curates narratives drawn from the subcontinent’s modern and contemporary art movements. In the recent past, we have expanded our curatorial focus to include emerging and historical narratives of Southeast Asian art and culture. Over the years, Akar Prakar has participated in art exhibitions at institutions and museums in different parts of the world, including the 8th Berlin Biennale; Documenta 14; Musée des Arts asiatiques, Nice; Musée national des arts asiatiques Guimet, Paris; DRAF, London; Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin; Palazzo Madama, Turin; Museo d’Arte Orientale, Turin; Asia Week New York 2020, to name a few. Other than curating exhibitions of Indian modern and contemporary artists, Akar Prakar has been involved with publishing projects in the form of monographs and books on masters such as S. Our books are co-published and distributed by Mapin Publishing. In 2019, Akar Prakar launched the first edition of ‘artVarta Research and Publishing Grant’, a new initiative of the Lath Sarvodaya Trust, Kolkata, which has been actively engaged with art patronage for the past five decades. The grant supports the work and research of emerging scholars, curators and artists in the field of publishing in arts and culture.

Wishing Chirag Patel a very happy birthday and a splendid year ahead.

Chirag Patel (b. 1973) is a painter and visual artist based between Gir and Vadodara in Gujarat. A graduate of the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University of Baroda (BFA, 1999), Patel’s artistic practice is deeply influenced by his lifelong engagement with the wilderness of Gujarat. Alongside his art, he has long been involved with wildlife conservation, collaborating with ecological initiatives such as lion censuses and nature education programs.

Patel held his first solo exhibition at Maneland Resort, Sasan Gir, in 2003. In 2009, he presented This is Not It, a solo show at Priyasri Art Gallery, Mumbai. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions, including The Baroda March (Mumbai, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2014, 2021); a three-person show at Art Konsult, New Delhi, (2008); After Images at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Baroda (2007); shows by Samsara Art, Mumbai (2007), and Art World Gallery, Chennai (2007). He was featured in several editions of the Feb Show at ABS Bayer Gallery, Baroda (2004–2007), as well as exhibitions at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai (2003), and the Gujarat Lalit Kala Akademi (1998). He has also participated in several artist camps organized by Art World Gallery in Kodaikanal (2007) and the Harmony Art Foundation, Mumbai (2015).

Haloi stood alone amidst his generation as the one who painted without being weighed down by a past of “prescriptive manifestos”, seeking a quite distinct artistic language that could keep evolving. In fact, if there was something consistent and enduring in Haloi’s work, it was the poetic grace embedded in his pictorial language along with a subtlety of expression.

In celebration of Akar Prakar’s 20th Anniversary, we hosted the exhibition Of Spaces of their Own: Women Artists in 20th Century in India at our gallery space in New Delhi. The show later travelled to Akar Prakar, Kolkata, to mark this significant milestone.

As the title suggested, the exhibition brought together women artists across India with their diverse practices spanning the 20th century, from the early to late mid-twentieth century. It spoke about how they held and made spaces of their own.

The show included pre- and post-independence period women artists of different time frames, ranging from the early twentieth century to that of the sixties, though their practices often extended beyond this timeline.

On the occasion of the 100th birth anniversary of artist Meera Mukherjee, Akar Prakar presented ‘Meera Mukherjee: Life in all Things’ to celebrate her life and works. This exhibition was dedicated to remembering Meera and her genius, her commitment to her art, through the various mediums that she used during her journey as an artist, from wooden dolls to ceramic tiles, plaster of Paris to carvings on marble and terracotta works both large and intimate, drawings and paintings and finally her sculptures in Bronze which defined her artistic practice and which she struggled to create in spite of the lack of an art ecosystem.

A master colourist, Raza evolved a personal plastic language in which he explored life, reality and nature. A geometry of origins and essences. In his art, an Indian vision of life merged with the French la sens plastique. He also thoughtfully deviated from the dominant crisis and tension-driven modernism, its dissonance to alternative modernity of peace, silence and consonance discovered in humility and tranquillity. In a manner of speaking, Raza bypassed history to look at eternity. His art lyrically and meditatively celebrated life. It was a life-enhancing art; sensuous and spiritual simultaneously. Raza would have been a hundred years old on 22nd February 2022. His art will live forever.
