Akar Prakar Modern and contemporary Indian art H. Raza, Gopal Ghose, Sarbari Roy Choudhury, Meera Mukherjee, Ganesh Pyne, Prodosh Das Gupta, among other titles.

Founded in 2004 by Reena and Abhijit Lath, Akar Prakar traces its roots to a family of Indian modern and contemporary art collectors, spanning three generations. Engaging in transcultural histories through collaborations with international museums and curators, Akar Prakar has created a space for indigenous representations from Indian modern and contemporary artists. Operating between its two galleries, in Kolkata and New Delhi, Akar Prakar curates narratives drawn from the subcontinent’s modern and contemporary art movements. In the recent past, we have expanded our curatorial focus to include emerging and historical narratives of Southeast Asian art and culture. Over the years, Akar Prakar has participated in art exhibitions at institutions and museums in different parts of the world, including the 8th Berlin Biennale; Documenta 14; Musée des Arts asiatiques, Nice; Musée national des arts asiatiques Guimet, Paris; DRAF, London; Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin; Palazzo Madama, Turin; Museo d’Arte Orientale, Turin; Asia Week New York 2020, to name a few. Other than curating exhibitions of Indian modern and contemporary artists, Akar Prakar has been involved with publishing projects in the form of monographs and books on masters such as S. Our books are co-published and distributed by Mapin Publishing. In 2019, Akar Prakar launched the first edition of ‘artVarta Research and Publishing Grant’, a new initiative of the Lath Sarvodaya Trust, Kolkata, which has been actively engaged with art patronage for the past five decades. The grant supports the work and research of emerging scholars, curators and artists in the field of publishing in arts and culture.

Remembering the artist Paritosh Sen on his 108th Birth Anniversary.

Born in Dhaka, (now Bangladesh) in 1918. Graduated at Govt. School of Art and Crafts, Madras, 1940. Between 1950-53, Paritosh Sen studied in Paris at Andre Lhote’s School, at the Academy Grand Chaumier, Ecole des Beaux Arts and at Ecole de Louvre (for History of Painting).

In 1943 he was one of the founder members of Calcutta Group. In 1962, he was invited by French Government to design Bengali typeface based on script of Rabindranath Tagore. In 1979 the Indo - Soviet Friendship Association exhibited his works in Moscow. In 1986 he was Commissioner, Indian section of Havana Biennale II, Cuba. He was a member of General Council, LKA, New Delhi and also a member of Executive Council, Visva Bharati University, Santiniketan.

He contributed numerous articles and books about contemporary art. In 2002, the French Government conferred him Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.

He has had many shows of his artworks both during his lifetime and after his death in 2008

When we revisit the past, we stand before time. We experience a time before our time. Here, before implies both time and space. We literally and bodily stand before a work of art that was made before our time. Yet, the three modernists, contemporaries of each other, were untimely: Amrita Sher-Gil, Jamini Roy and Rabindranath Tagore had an uncanny vision of times to come when modernist definitions of a work of art would develop fractures.

Remembering Gaganendranath Tagore on the occasion of his 159th birthday anniversary.

Born in 1867, the brother of Abanindranath Tagore and the eldest son of Rabindranath’s cousin, Gunendranath, Gaganendranath Tagore, took a concise interest in drawing, painting and academic studies. Following Gunendranath’s premature death in 1881, Gaganendranath, at the age of fourteen, took over as the potential head of the junior branch of the Tagores at Jorasanko. In 1896, subsequent to the partition of family estates, he began to take care of the administration.

Through 1916 - 1918, Gaganendranath discovered a new medium of expression: humour and satire in the form of caricature. Amongst his significant works are ‘Adbhut Lok’, ‘Birupa Bajra’, ‘Naba Hullor’. Some of his other important works and series are, ‘Dadabhayer Deyala,’ later published as ‘Bhodor Bahadur’, illustrations for ‘Jivansmriti’ (1912), sketches of rural Bengal, Ranchi and Puri, employing water-colour as the medium, and ‘Chaitanya Series’. He also experimented with cubism, folk-lore, and images of the deceased and the world beyond.

He was paralysed a year before his death in 1938.

Celebrating the 113th birth anniversary of Maqbool Fida Husain, we honor his memory and contributions.🙏 

Born in 1913 in Pandharpur, Maharashtra, Husain’s early artistic journey was shaped by his self-taught practice, and his ambition to become a painter led him to move to Mumbai in 1937. Initially, he began his career by painting cinema hoardings and designing furniture and toys, while simultaneously nurturing a deeper engagement with painting. In 1947, he also co-founded the Progressive Artists’ Group with F.N. Souza, S.H. Raza, K.H. Ara, H.A. Gade and S.K. Bakre.

Husain’s art drew profoundly from India’s cultural, folk, and mythological traditions, which he reimagined through a modernist lens. His canvases vibrantly bridged the past and present, depicting subjects ranging from deities and epic narratives of the Mahabharata and Ramayana to iconic contemporary figures such as Mother Teresa. This ability to capture the essence of Indian identity through bold lines, dynamic forms, and vivid colours distinguished his practice, making his work both accessible and revolutionary.

Husain lived in his self-imposed exile from 2006 until his death. He passed away in London in 2011, leaving behind a vast body of work that continues to define and inspire the discourse on modern Indian art.

Here are a few glimpses of our current exhibition at 𝐀𝐤𝐚𝐫 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐤𝐚𝐫, 𝐊𝐨𝐥𝐤𝐚𝐭𝐚.

Among Vivan’s many assistants was young Tapan Bhattacharyya, an engineer in Doordarshan. He helped with everything, from stringing up reprinted covers of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Bengali magazines, to installing an erudite ‘library’ with mock book-bodies, to participating in preparing 500 box files with names and pictures of distinguished Bengalis from across two centuries on their spines.
