Sayanee Sarkar’s practice sits at the edge of representation, where the body dissolves into space and perception becomes unstable. Here, free space holds as much weight as colour.

𝗔𝗥𝗧𝗜𝗦𝗧 𝗦𝗣𝗢𝗧𝗟𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧: 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗽 𝗗𝗮𝘀

This work by Pradip Das foregrounds fragmentation and the critical appropriation of images. The word “genocide,” rendered in the recognizable branding style of Coca-Cola, draws attention to the role of multinational corporations within the histories of global conflicts, disasters, and wars.

Slide 1: Untitled
Pigment, acrylic, wood, iron and plaster
13 3/4 x 16 3/8 x 1 in.
2025, Kolkata

Through objects, literature, and images, this work captures the complexity of memory and survival, evoking identities that are fragmented and fractured—much as memory itself. Excerpts from Atin Bandopadhyay’s novel Neelkatha Pakhir Khonje connect the work to Bengal’s shared history, tracing continuities and ruptures before and after the Partition.

Slide 2: Untitled

Pradip Das’s work foregrounds fragmentation and examines how narratives emerge through the joining of disconnected memories. This work shows a critical use of decorative wood carving, realistic representation, and his unusual choice of medium and material suitable for the purpose.

𝗔𝗥𝗧𝗜𝗦𝗧 𝗦𝗣𝗢𝗧𝗟𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧: 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗽 𝗗𝗮𝘀

In 2025, installation artist, painter and printmaker Pradip Das conceptualised the theme for the Durga Puja pandal at Behala Friends in Kolkata – Nabanna: Wounds, War, and Hunger.

Drawing inspiration from both literature and history, Das connected the past – particularly the hardships faced by the marginalised during the Bengal famine of 1943 -- with the ongoing atrocities in various parts of the world.

𝗔𝗥𝗧𝗜𝗦𝗧 𝗦𝗣𝗢𝗧𝗟𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧: 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗽 𝗗𝗮𝘀

Pradip Das's multimedia works showcase his innovative use of mediums, profound historical consciousness, and thoughtful material choices, revealing an archaeology of our cultural present.

This untitled work using an excerpt from Atin Bandopadhyay’s renowned novel Neelkatha Pakhir Khonje speaks of memory and partition and the problem of identity in the post-colonial nation.

The bicycle, the damaged scissor, and images of 1971 photographs narrate the fragmented histories of migration and displacement in Bengal that constitute our present.

𝗔𝗥𝗧𝗜𝗦𝗧 𝗦𝗣𝗢𝗧𝗟𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧: 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗽 𝗗𝗮𝘀

Pradip Das is best known for his career-long exploration of new materials, ideas, approaches, and techniques. His practice engages deeply with Bengal’s cultural and political histories – especially evident in his large-scale public works created for Durga Puja in Kolkata.

This video speaks of the puja pandal at Samaj Sebi Sangha as conceptualised by Das in 2025 – the theme being পথের পাঁচালী ১৯৪৬. It provides a deep dive into the history of the club and the role it played in providing shelter for the victims of the Calcutta Riots of 1946.

The Untitled series by Rahul Sarkar unfolds in two interconnected parts, both reflecting on the fragile relationship between memory, time, and mortality. One depicts a solitary figure walking toward an uncertain destination while holding a single flower -- a gesture that becomes symbolic of the human condition -- an ongoing movement toward an end that remains unavoidable. The other depicts an unfamiliar figure almost entirely concealed behind a bunch of flowers. The flowers operate not merely as decorative elements, but as emotional residues—metaphors for friendships, fleeting encounters, intimacy, and the accumulation of lived experiences.

Slide 2: Untitled I

Deeply rooted in the subjectivities of his lived own experiences as an androgynous person, Rahul Sarkar’s work is often radically autobiographical. This set of works stems from his experience in questioning his gender and sexuality -- the very concerns that continue to shape and overwhelm his work, and his experience in endlessly weighing the balance between right and wrong within the depths of his own mind. It is an attempt to search for shades of grey within the distance between black and white.

On 5 June 2026, Emami Art hosted an exclusive walkthrough for a select gathering of leading architects, interior designers, design professionals, and cultural patrons at its gallery space in Kolkata, offering a guided experience through two ongoing exhibitions: the group show An Ancient Ballad and Sayanee Sarkar’s debut solo Alchemy of Absolute Intimacy.

Together, the two exhibitions exemplify Emami Art's curatorial vision: creating spaces where historical continuities and emerging practices can coexist. This intimate evening sought to create meaningful exchanges around contemporary artistic practice and collecting.

An Ancient Ballad and Alchemy of Absolute Intimacy are on view till 10 July 2026.

Arunima Choudhury’s vast understanding of natural colours which she uses for her paintings found a different direction in her experiments with the medium of eco print. Leaves and flowers morphed together upon a white cloth creates a unique abstraction hosting some recognisable elements painted here and there which in this case two human figures engaged in enjoyment and celebration.

Sayanee Sarkar’s work is often driven by the use of found imagery. Night Borrowed I is a scene she did not experience directly but found through a social media image. We constantly imagine ourselves in scenarios we are entirely removed from, proving that second-hand references can carry the exact weight of first-hand experiences. Sarkar frequently immerses herself in images of youth navigating shared spaces. The confusion of that age, the intense proximity, and the friction of closeness—these moments may not last long, but their physical toll is always reflected on the bodies.
