🐠 Complete Guide to Basic & Planted Aquariums

1. Planning Your Aquarium

Before buying fish or plants, decide:

Type:

Basic Aquarium: Decorative fish, artificial plants, simple equipment.

Planted Aquarium: Live aquatic plants with natural décor, requires more care.

Tank Size:

Beginners: 2–3 ft tank (60–100 liters) is easier to maintain than very small tanks.

Budget: Include tank, filter, lighting, heater, substrate, décor, and fish.

2. Equipment Needed

For Basic Aquarium

Glass or acrylic tank

Internal or hang-on filter

Heater (for tropical fish)

Air pump & air stone (optional but good for oxygenation)

Artificial gravel/sand

Decorative items (rocks, ornaments, fake plants)

Lighting (LED or fluorescent)

For Planted Aquarium

Tank (low iron glass for better clarity is ideal)

External canister filter or sponge filter

Heater (24–28°C for most plants & fish)

Plant substrate (nutrient-rich soil like ADA, Fluval Stratum, or river sand + root tabs)

CO₂ system (pressurized or DIY, optional but improves plant growth)

Aquarium-safe driftwood & natural rocks

LED plant light (full spectrum, 6500–8000K)

Fertilizers (liquid + root tabs)

3. Setup Process

Step 1: Cleaning the Tank

Rinse with plain water (no soap or chemicals).

Check for leaks before adding substrate.

Step 2: Adding Substrate

Basic: Wash gravel/sand and spread evenly (2–3 cm deep).

Planted: Layer nutrient soil (2–3 cm) + cover with sand/gravel to prevent clouding.

Step 3: Placing Décor & Plants

Basic: Add ornaments and artificial plants.

Planted: Arrange live plants — tall plants at the back, medium in middle, short in front.

Anchor plants properly to avoid uprooting.

Step 4: Filling Water

Place a plate/plastic sheet to avoid disturbing substrate.

Fill slowly with dechlorinated water.

Step 5: Installing Equipment

Set up filter, heater, air pump.

Planted tanks need proper lighting — 6–8 hrs/day initially.

Step 6: Cycling the Tank

Run the tank without fish for at least 7–14 days to grow beneficial bacteria.

Add a pinch of fish food or use bottled bacteria starter.

4. Choosing Fish & Plants

Basic Aquarium Fish

Guppies, Mollies, Swordtails, Platies, Tetras, Gouramis, Goldfish (for unheated tanks).

Planted Aquarium Fish

Neon Tetras, Rasboras, Otocinclus, Corydoras, Dwarf Gourami, Shrimp (Amano, Cherry).

Beginner-Friendly Plants

Java Fern, Anubias, Amazon Sword, Vallisneria, Hygrophila, Water Wisteria.

5. Daily & Weekly Maintenance

Daily:

Feed fish once or twice (only as much as they eat in 2 minutes).

Check temperature & filter function.

Weekly:

20–30% water change (use siphon to clean substrate).

Wipe glass with algae scraper.

Check water parameters (pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate).

Planted Tank Extras:

Dose fertilizers as per plant needs.

Trim overgrown plants.

Monitor CO₂ levels (avoid fish suffocation).

6. Common Problems & Solutions

Cloudy Water: Often due to unwashed substrate or bacterial bloom — let filter run.

Algae Growth: Reduce light hours, avoid overfeeding, add algae-eating fish/shrimp.

Fish Dying: Check ammonia/nitrite levels; never overstock.

7. Pro Tips

Bigger tanks are easier to maintain than tiny bowls.

Always quarantine new fish before adding to main tank.

Avoid mixing aggressive and peaceful species.

For planted tanks, stable CO₂ + good light = lush growth.
