The troupe THEATRE PLATFORM started its journey since 1992 and till continuing the journey – journey for something new, something better, something unconventional… in Theatre. We have tried to experiment in every discipline of theatrical activities like performance style, performance space, performance text, training process, process of building a new performance, workshop, seminar etc.
From the genesis of our troupe we have tried to make use of fundamental elements of Indian drama and spread the production within the reach of all and sundry. Our performance space includes villages, suburbs, schoolrooms, clubs, office rooms, college canteens, seminar halls, art galleries and as odd as roofs, courtyards. Instead of confining a play only to the people of the cities we wish to go every nook and cranny of the country – even the remote areas of villages – with our plays. We wish to reach that very man who has never had an experience to watch an artistic performance.
Besides of performance and training we have a mission to arrange seminars and festivals of experimental and unconventional performances from different parts of India and abroad.
We also try to support all the troupes who need our help to make new performances or training on different spheres of theatre and allied arts like design and direction, choreography, stage design, costume, martial art, acting etc.
Now Theatre Platform is a repertory aided by Ministry Of Culture, Government Of India that performs activities like making new performances for different spaces, performing throughout India, arranging festivals, arranging workshops, arranging seminars, making children theatre, encouraging school theatre, helping other troupes to develop new dramas, making awareness dramas for government and nongovernmental organizations, conducting workshops for other troupes throughout the year.
HIGHLIGHTS
We are privileged to state that ‘ILAA GURHAISHAA’ produced by our group ‘Theatre Platform’ , playwright Bratya Basu and directed by Debasish has been selected in the prestigious 19th Bharat Rang Mahotsav by ‘National School of Drama’ to be performed on 14/2/2017 at Sreeram Centre, New Delhi.
27th March 2000, World Theatre Day. The occasion was an extension of ‘Natya Swapna Kalpa 2000’conducted by renowned theatre group ‘Anya Theatre’ leaded by prolific theatre director Bivash Chakraborty_________ a book named ‘Shatabdir Natya Chinta’ was waiting for inaugurated by the hand of chief minister of West Bengal Sri Budhyadeb Bhattacharya and an open air performance named ‘Tumi kee Korechho’ was waiting for its 36thperformance at Nandan premises in the ‘Open Air Theatre Festival’. It was an auspicious moment for Theatre Platform that we were invited to perform in the festival in front of famous theatre personalities of Bengal and media. We performed the drama adopted from ‘Bertold Brecht’s ‘Trial of Lookoollus’ translated by prolific playwright Chandan Sen. The drama based on social menace, communal violence, literally spellbound everybody . From that very moment Theatre Platform was identified as one of the mainstream theatre units of West Bengal, which was started its journey in the year 1992 at Khardaha, North 24 Parganas district.
In next few days Theatre Platform groomed very fast. Conducted an exceptional project, a stage drama named ‘DUKHINI’, performed by a group formed in collaboration of the theatre workers of Bangladesh and Pakistan. The drama was staged at Gorky Sadan, Kolkata on 10th and 11th June 2000. Two renowned theatre workers of Bangaladesh and Pakistan, Mrs. Sara Jakerand Mr. Shaheed Nadim respectively were the director and dramatist of the play. We have arranged a seminar on ‘sex worker and theatre’ in that occasion which was participated by Sara Jaker, Shaheed Nadim, Pabitra Sarkar, Sohag Sen, Ramala Chakraborty, Ranjana Bhattacharyay, Nripendra Saha.
After that Theatre Platform started its activity in full swing. Every member of the group gets them busy in various works like performances, workshops, attaining several theatre festivals of other groups or organized by Theatre Platform. Among them some are ‘National Open Air Theatre Festival’ conducted by Paschim Bango Nattya Academy, ‘Nattyamele 2001’, ‘Inter District Street Drama Festival in 24 Parganas’, ‘Festival organized by Drama Division of Rabindra Baharati University’, ‘Overnight theatre festival on the eve of New Year arranged by Annya Theatre, named ‘Nattya-swapno-kalpo-2001’, ‘National Theatre Festival’ organized by Ganakrishti , State Government Theatre Festival -2011, State Government Theatre Festival -2012, State Government Theatre Festival -2013, Bratyajon International Theatre Festival 2013, 'Bohirbango Natyautsav' in Aalahabad arranged by Paschim Bango Nattya Academy, State Government Theatre Festival -2015 etc.
Meanwhile Theatre Platform was also taking part regularly in an exceptional effort to establish a concrete platform of a experimental form of space theatre called ‘Intimate Theatre’ along with the other leading group of Bengal theatre such as Annya Theatre, Chetana, ALT, Rangakarmee, Nirbaak Abhinay Academi, Sonarpur Krishti Sansad and Chokh. In a short duration of six months this desperate attempt had been taken at Sarala Memorial Hall in assistance of the leading personalities of theatre like Bibhash Chakraborty, Prabir Guha, Nripendra Saha, Usha Ganguli, Arun Mukhapadhyay and many others and with the financial help by ‘Seagull Theatre Quarterly’.
Besides of performing theatre and arranging programmes on theatre and allied arts we always try to help other theatre troupes and individuals to make new performance by designing their stage, choreography, costume, direction, acting etc. We have supported directors like Bivash Chakraborty, Bratya Basu, Chandan Sen, Kuntal Mukhopadhaya, Anirban Bhattacharya, Sudip Gupta, Arpita Ghosh, Anish Ghosh, Debasish Biswas etc. We have performed throughout India like Assam, Lakhnow, Hydrabad, Delhi, Gujrat etc. for these performances.
COMMENTS ON OUR FIRST OPEN AIR POPULAR PERFORMANCE
Arun Mukherjee – No doubt Theatre Platform has done a great job. Not only the subject that they adopt from Brecht and blend it with the contemporary politics but also the form and their implementation, their efficiency and overall the exceptional performance really claims appreciation.
Bibhas Chakraborty – This is not only a street drama; it’s an explosion which stir me very much like others.
Usha Ganguli – You’re opening the doors.
Nripendra Saha – It’s a unique piece of performance by the actors of Theatre Platform which consist of a balanced proportion of acting, acrobatic movements and martial art that I haven’t seen ever before.
Ananda Lal, The Telegraph – It is furiously energetic in style and almost militant in confronting the audience in social issues. Tumi Ki Korechho opens explosively with high-wattage drumming and continues with tremendous physical power, to examine violence in contemporary India and try to change our self-centred indifference to communal riots.
Sara Jacker, Bangladesh – We have learned a new form of drama.
Adriana Barracao Teatro, Brazil – It was the first time I saw an interpretation of Brecht by an Indian group and it helped me know how universal not only what he had to say but how universal theatre is.
Shaheed Nadeem, Pakistan – We are enriched by a great experience of open air theatre in the city of theatre, Kolkata. This production makes us think about a new horizon of theatre.
