Sienna Calcutta

Sienna Calcutta Sienna is a homegrown brand that that tells the story of Bengal through its craft and food design.

Sienna was born out of a need to preserve, nurture and re-visit the ancient art forms of rural India. Founder Sulagna Ghosh collaborates with the artisans to create modern and functional products using age old methods of producing terracotta and glazed pottery, handspun textiles, woodwork and cane artifacts, among others. Having been brought up in India’s culture capital Calcutta, in a household t

hat fostered the arts, she always knew that she would be happiest in the field of creative design. After graduating from university in New York, she returned to Bengal at an opportune time. Equipped with a global outlook she joined her mother’s folk art workshop in Santiniketan , which was set up to provide employment to the rural people in the surrounding area. She connected deeply with the cause and through this her inherent passion for design found a channel. A serious patron of the arts, she is committed to the preservation of these time honored traditions. Additionally she recognizes the need to breathe new life into classic art forms by introducing modern designs and techniques to these craftsmen. She strives to break down cultural boundaries and existing prejudices to enable collaboration between different artisans specializing in different art forms. Through the storefronts in Kolkata she is determined to pave for these gifted artisans the avenues they need to bring their products to a larger metropolitan marketplace.

we’re deeply humbled to be awarded ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ultimate stars by Culinary Culture™ this year

from the beginning, our aim has been simple to bring bengal to the world, and the world to bengal. to see this journey recognised on a national stage means a great deal to all of us. and to witness eastern india and its many culinary stories receive this kind of recognition makes it even more special

a heartfelt thank you to Raaj Sanghvi Vir Sanghvi Sam and the entire team at culinary culture for the warmth, generosity and respect with which you have celebrated our chefs and our work 🫶

this one is for our chefs and every member of the sienna fam working behind the scenes, who have been part of this journey, and for all the stories from bengal still waiting to be told

a special thank you to for adding a little more sweetness to our celebration with the lovely cake 🩶

Manan Sen used to hate fish. now he’s making his mother’s macch’r jhaal for this episode of sienna family meals.
it’s a recipe he grew up with, and one that took him a while to appreciate. two days of prep later, he’s finally at the stove — with nish*t making himself useful, and naparajit Naparajit Goswami repeatedly appearing where he absolutely doesn’t need to be, and somehow eating the fish before anyone else gets to.

between a busy kitchen, being chased out of the way more than once, and trying to cook for a very hungry family, it was hardly a smooth process. but somehow, that’s what family meals are — a little chaotic, a little messy, and eventually a table full of people enjoying something made with love.

this pairing is built for those wanting to savour the last taste of summer in peak monsoon. and what better way than with everyone’s favourite drink of the moment, the picante. 🥭🌶️

our mango picante is fiery, fruity and tart, bringing acidity and a lingering hit of heat. paired with miso-whipped tofu and kolmi-mushroom stir-fry, creamy, earthy and umami, it’s a pairing built on contrast, where the richness of the food meets the spice of the drink

together, they hold onto the last of summer while leaning into the comforts of monsoon 🌧️🍸

come taste this pairing with us at 49/1 hindustan park

last month our team travelled to london, and we asked chef subhojit Subhs Bardhan and chef naparajit Naparajit Goswami to bring back photographs whenever they had a spare minute. safe to say they understood the assignment.

the result is part holiday scrapbook, part chef brain: big ben and tower bridge alongside borough market, oysters, produce worth photographing, a quintessentially oversized tesco, kitchenware, and a menu that simply had to make it into the camera roll. apparently, half the trip was naparajit saying, “i know a place” while subhojit photographed it.

the final stop was one we’d been looking forward to for a long time: lunch at st. john, a restaurant whose ingredient-first philosophy and quiet restraint have long been an inspiration for us. having our well-thumbed copy of the nose to tail cookbook signed by the team felt like the perfect final page.

our story is only ever as interesting as the people who make it. consider this a few pages from theirs.

as the seasons change, so do our menus 🌿☀️

rooted in what’s growing, what’s arriving at the market, and the stories these ingredients carry.

our chicken chashu noodle bowl follows the flavours of a bengali summer, bringing together kacha aam 🥭, lau pata, and the layered techniques of ramen into a bowl that’s light, bright, and deeply comforting.

every city is made up of countless personal maps. for chef Dipto that map begins in the north of calcutta.

in this episode of where the sienna fam eats, he takes us through the streets of hatibagan and shyambazar, retracing a morning that has unfolded in different ways over the years. there are favourite kochuri shops that have outlasted changing routines, familiar faces behind the counter, conversations that drift effortlessly from breakfast to the season’s jackfruit, and the unmistakable rhythm of a neighbourhood waking up.

this is our tenth episode, and if we’ve learnt anything, it’s that we’re not really documenting where the sienna fam eats. we’re documenting the lives that exist around food. meals become markers of home, migration, memory and belonging. we never quite know what we’ll find when we begin —the story reveals itself through conversations, chance encounters, unexpected detours, and shared meals.

thank you for walking these streets with us. here’s to the stories still waiting to be found.
