We visited BONGOPEX 2025, the 10th State-Level Philatelic Exhibition organized by the West Bengal Postal Circle, held from 14th to 17th November at Science City, Kolkata. The exhibition brought together philatelists, collectors, students, and enthusiasts from West Bengal, Sikkim, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The main aim of the event was to promote the hobby of stamp collecting and provide a platform for competitive exhibitions at the state level. More than 400 frames displayed a variety of rare and diverse stamp collections. Among the highlights were some truly historic pieces, including the famous 1854 Queen Victoria “Inverted Head” stamp, a rare gem, and the Indian Bishop Mark, a significant postal artifact cherished by collectors for its historical importance. The exhibition not only displayed rare and beautiful stamps but also highlighted the joy, creativity, and history rooted in philately.

It was one of those unplanned days. I was passing through Dharmatala without any fixed plan, just wandering. Suddenly, I thought—why not go to College Street and pick up a few books from Boipara? As I was thinking about it, I saw a tram headed towards Shyambazar. Without giving it much thought, I got on. Before the tram arrived, I had been sitting near the tram depot. One tram was standing still there, probably taking a break. I waited quietly, soaking in the calm of the moment. While I was waiting, a few boys came up and asked, “When will this tram leave?” One of my friends who was with me replied to them. That led to a short conversation. They asked, “Apart from Victoria Memorial, Yellow Taxis, Park Street, and Howrah Bridge—what else is there to see in Kolkata?” That question really made me think. It felt like people from outside the city often only know the polished, Instagram-famous side of Kolkata. But there’s so much more. The hidden places, the old corners, the forgotten streets—those are what truly make Kolkata what it is. The soul of the city isn’t just in grand monuments, but in the quiet charm of everyday life.
As we rode further, we noticed something frustrating. The tram line was completely blocked by parked cars. The tram couldn’t move. But the driver didn’t give up. He patiently asked people to move their vehicles, one by one, and slowly guided the tram forward. It was both sad and beautiful—sad to see such a heritage ignored, yet beautiful to witness the dedication of someone still trying to keep it alive.
Even though the journey was slow and full of stops, it was meaningful. I clicked a few photos, tried to capture some of those quiet, nostalgic moments. It wasn’t just about reaching College Street or buying books anymore. It became a moment of reflection—a small rediscovery of my city..

Where Strings Whisper Legacy: The Soul of Sound at Kolkata.

Nestled in the heart of Rashbehari Avenue, Kolkata, Hemen & Co. is not just a musical instrument shop — it is a living legacy. Founded by Hemen Chandra Sen in 1940, the shop has become a sacred space for lovers of Indian classical music. Hemen & Co. is world-renowned for its handcrafted string instruments, especially tanpuras, sitars, and sarods, which have been used by legendary musicians like Pandit Ravi Shankar, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, and Pandit Bhimsen Joshi.
During a recent visit, I stepped into this iconic shop and was immediately struck by its timeless charm. The soft hum of a freshly tuned tanpura filled the air, as skilled hands worked patiently on shaping and polishing each piece. The walls of the shop tell silent stories — of music, devotion, and heritage. Through the lens, moments were captured that reflect the heart of Indian culture — where tradition meets melody. In this unassuming corner of Kolkata, every string sings not just a note—but a memory, a maestro, and a masterpiece born of time-honored hands.

Navigating Life Among Strangers in our City, by members of PHOTOSCOPE

The streets of Kolkata is a vibrant mosaic of human diversity, where every corner is a stage for life’s drama. From the bustling markets of New Market to the tranquil expanse of the Maidan, the city's public spaces are teeming with people from diverse backgrounds. Yet, in this teeming multitude, the sense of anonymity can be overwhelming. The paradox of feeling alone among millions is a common experience, prompting many to seek ways to bridge the gap between strangers.

Last week, on a very sunny day, We went to College Street to click pictures for an assignment of our college. Anirban Chatterjee, an avid photographer and a fellow student, was there to document all the pictures. His passion for photography was evident in the way he meticulously framed each shot, ensuring that every picture told a story. He helped me a lot that day. But the time I reached College Street it started raining. There was also a big list of fictional books with me, which I wanted to buy. I bought a few from that list. After few moments I found Anirban already danked. Our initial enthusiasm was undeterred. We took shelter in the coffee house. After an hour it stopped raining and we started our journey again. And now we came to Esplanade at Dacres Lane. There we met with our senior Sandip Shee, who helped us a lot. He guided us as well as he can. From the moment we began working with Sandip da, it was clear that his wealth of experience would be invaluable. Perhaps the most enduring impact of Sandip da's mentorship is the inspiration he imparted. Their passion for photography is contagious, reigniting our own enthusiasm and commitment to the craft. By sharing his journey, complete with challenges and triumphs, they reminded us of the resilience and creativity required to excel in this field. We started taking pictures. Photographing strangers is an adventure into the unknown. Each shot was unpredictable, offering a unique story captured in a fraction of a second. The excitement lies in the spontaneity—whether it’s a street vendor lost in thought, a child chasing dogs, or an elderly couple holding hands, these unplanned moments often result in the most compelling photographs. Infact the day which seems boring was far enjoyable than a planned day. We also tried new dishes there. After Dacres Lane we had also covered the tram-deport. Though I was unable to complete our topic, I experienced a lot. Later I chose another topic and submitted the assignment.

And the rain was not just a disruption; it was a blessing. The air smelled fresher, the earth seemed to breathe, and everything around me took on a softer, more enchanting hue. There was something deeply romantic about the rain, an invitation to slow down and savour the moment. As I ventured outside with my camera, the raindrops tapping against my umbrella, I began to see the world through a different lens. The rain created a natural filter, adding a dreamy quality to everything it touched. The colors were more vivid, the reflections more pronounced. I was unable to capture the delicate beauty of raindrops clinging to petals, the ripples in puddles, and the way the rain blurred the lines between the sky and the earth, but I enjoyed that moment.
