From the sacred Chhau masks of Purulia to the ancient Gomira faces of Dinajpur, India's mask traditions carry centuries of mythology, folk theatre, and tribal storytelling. Handcrafted from wood, clay, and natural pigments, these are not mere decorative objects — they are living expressions of India's intangible cultural heritage. Today, we will uncover the story behind the Ganjam Masks and the cultural legacy they embody. Ganjam masks are traditional, vibrant folk masks hand-carved by rural artisans in Odisha. Primarily crafted in the historic artisan village of Chadhiapalli (Bhanjanagar block), these creations have been used for centuries in local folk performances, traditional puppet shows, and the region's lively Thakurani Jatra festivals.

To effectively run our Kalanjali Art Gazebo, it is essential that young people are continuously exposed to diverse forms of art, culture, and creative expression. Such exposure broadens perspectives, nurtures imagination, and encourages a more creative and sensitive way of engaging with the world.

With this objective in mind, we have institutionalized a monthly cultural exposure programme, through which our youth visit leading cultural spaces such as KCC, TRI Art Studio, Birla Academy, and other art and cultural centres. While we have undertaken similar visits in the past, we have now systematized the process to ensure regular and meaningful engagement with the cultural landscape.

These interactions have enabled our youth to connect with numerous artists, cultural practitioners, theatre groups, and creative collectives across Kolkata. Over time, many of these relationships have evolved into ongoing exchanges and collaborations, creating valuable opportunities for learning, mentorship, and creative growth.

For Prayasam, cultural insight is not merely an enrichment activity; it is an essential component of youth development. As we nurture social enterprises such as PVB Studio and Duo Ranir Songshar, exposure to art, aesthetics, storytelling, design, and diverse cultural practices helps young people develop creative thinking, confidence, innovation, and a deeper understanding of society. These experiences play a crucial role in shaping a creative bend of mind, enabling our youth to become not only skilled professionals but also thoughtful and culturally aware individuals.

Khadi, a Canvas: When Masterpieces Met the Loom
A Retrospective on an Extraordinary Convergence of Art, Heritage, and Community in Kolkata

When acclaimed textile revivalist Gaurang Shah () envisioned translating the intricate, high-drama iconography of legendary painter Raja Ravi Varma into Jamdani weave on khadi, skeptics claimed it was impossible. The fluid human figures, complex shadows, and vivid movements of Varma’s chromolithographs seemed far too detailed for the traditional loom.

What followed was a historic, three-to-four-year saga of patience, persistence, and profound community collaboration. In the quiet villages of Srikakulam, a group of women—many of whom had never touched a loom before—stepped up to learn. Working alongside master artisans, they meticulously dyed threads to match Varma’s original palettes and slowly, thread by thread, breathed life into the fabric.

The Triumph of Collective Craft
The result of this monumental effort was 35 breathtaking, limited-edition saris that bridged the gap between fine art and wearable heritage.

Kolkata's connoisseurs and art enthusiasts gathered at the TRI Art & Culture studio to witness this remarkable technical achievement firsthand. The exhibition was not merely a showcase of luxury textiles but a celebration of the untrained hands, immense patience, and collective spirit that turned an impossible dream into a stunning reality.

“Khadi, a Canvas” stands as a testament to the fact that when tradition meets community empowerment, history isn't just preserved—it's rewritten.

RITU is a quadralogy created as an immersive dance installation through the creative process of Prayasam’s Ontrack program. Developed with our young performers, the production traces the emotional journey from adolescence to self-awareness through the changing seasons of life. Built with organic materials and rooted in a multilingual, expressive performance language, RITU brought together dance, poetry, memory, and collective imagination.
The four segments — Aye Brishti Jhenpey, Rutha Vasant, Winter Call, and SuryaSakha — move through pain, reflection, awakening, and self-acceptance with rare honesty. Created with the dedication of 30 young participants, the work became a powerful expression of youth, growth, and artistic collaboration.
RITU stands as a living testament to the transformative power of Prayasam’s ONTRACK journey — a heartfelt celebration of the Seasons of Self-Reflection.

Involving your own stories in your own work allows your audience to create a unique connection to the experience you are articulating. By offering your experiences through brushstrokes, songs, movements, and installations, you are now engaged in the larger conversation. Art is not just a proven form of communication, but rather, it has allowed us to carefully unpack our own stories. From periods like the Renaissance, which ushered in an era of profound intellectual and artistic rebirth, to movements of resistance that used visual and performing arts to protest injustice and demand freedom, art has consistently stood at the forefront of change.

We live in a world that is constantly changing and data-driven, but we have something that we can always lean on: a human practice that has existed for as long as humans have—the need to tell stories and to listen to them. Every piece of art, in some respect, is a story, with the ability to connect the mosaic of our lived experiences into something larger. Art has been, and always will be, a universal language of truth—a record of the human experience, from cave paintings to present-day digital installations. In this regard, each piece of art is a story that links our individual experiences to universal themes.

Art is not just "decor" or "decorative"; it is a meaning-making process, using the act of creation and the hand of the creator to convey a small aspect of their mind, allowing the viewer to respond, interpret, and connect with it, and ultimately, with them.
