From Latent to Manifest — 34 Years of Sapphire Creations

For 34 years, Sapphire Creations has inhabited the space between what is latent and what is yet to manifest. Dance begins here—with an impulse, a sensation, an idea held within the body, waiting to become movement. Through practice, repetition, risk and imagination, dancers transform the invisible into the visible, the unspoken into gesture, and possibility into presence. What lies dormant within the body finds form through movement, continually shifting between intention and instinct, memory and discovery. As Sapphire turns 34 led by our Founder Director Sudarshan Chakravorty, we celebrate not simply the years behind us, but the countless possibilities still latent within the bodies, minds and collective imagination of its dancers. Sapphire Creations performed ANANDA TARANGA and VANDE MATARAM celebrating 51st Foundation Day of Doordarshan Kendra of Kolkata ( DD Bangla) led by Founder Director Sudarshan Chakravorty with a 10-member team. This was telecasted on 9th August at 8pm.

Sapphire Creations Dance Company is pleased to announce a specialized movement boot-camp bringing together two traditional Indian physical disciplines: Mallakhamb and Mayurbhanj Chhau. Designed for dancers, physical theatre performers, and movement practitioners, this intensive workshop offers an opportunity to explore the intersection of aerial leverage and grounded kinetic flow.

Both origin paths stem from historical military training encampments and royal patronage, representing two distinct branches of traditional Indian movement wisdom. The boot-camp focuses on using these techniques to broaden the contemporary dancer’s physical capacity, spatial control, and body awareness.

Core Areas of Focus
Continuous Fluidity & Torsion (Mayurbhanj Chhau): Participants will engage with Chhau's signature movement routines focusing on multi-axial spinal rotations, off-center weight distribution, and uninterrupted kinetic movement.
Isometric Balance & Leverage (Mallakhamb): The curriculum utilizes pole and rope Mallakhamb to build core engagement, joint stabilization, and calm endurance during extreme physical exertion.

Dynamic Adaptation: By training in both systems simultaneously, practitioners will learn to bridge explosive, sweeping motion with immediate deceleration and stillness.

Performance of ANANDA TARANGA & VANDE MATARAM by Sapphire Creations Dance Company celebrating the 51st Foundation Day of Doordarshan Kendra of Kolkata ( DD Bangla) as on 29th July in Doordarshan Bhavan. We open with a ritualistic dance as an ode to Bengal followed by the iconic poem by Bankim Chandra Chattapadhyay with a 8 member team led by Founder Director Sudarshan Chakravorty .

Today's press: 8th anniversary of SUBIJOYA DANCE FOUNDATION covered in today's The Telegraph-t2 The Telegraph-t2
It narrates the different dance idioms triggered in Bengal marking the evolution of Indian Contemporary dance with participation of three groups Subhangik, Dancers' Guild and Sapphire Creations Dance Company .
The demonstrations was followed by a ROUND TABLE with critics, scholars and practitioners.

Sapphire Creations Dance Company conducted a workshop on Contemporary dance in Silver Point School from class VII to XII led by Sudarshan Chakravorty and assisted by Raju Sarkar.
It was an enriching experience for all the students who got an insight to Indian physical wisdom of Yoga and Kalarippayattu together with an attempt to learn phrases of Indian Contemporary dance from Sapphire repertoire.

Sapphire's RITURANGA was recently performed in Rabindra Sadan in Behrampore in Murshidabad by a 10-member team.
Glimpses from the production depicting the six seasons of India namely, Grishma (Summer), Barsha (Monsoon), Sharat (Autumn), Hemanta ( Post Autumn), Sheeta ( Winter) and Basanto (Spring) with Tagore songs set to Western Philharmonic orchestra interpersed with poetries from Rabindranath Tagore's Geetanjali.
