প্রগাতিবাদী সন্ন্যাসী স্বামী বিবেকানন্দের মতে এই মহাভারতীয় সমাজ ব্যবস্থাই হল আদর্শ, যা আজো অনুসরণের যোগ্য। অনবদ্য ভাষায় বিশ্লেষণ করে তিনি বলছেন -

" The internal conflicts between the righteousness and filial affection in the mind of the god-fearing, yet feeble, old blind king Dhritararshtra; the majestic character of the grandsire Bhisma; the noble and virtuous nature of the royal Yudhisthira, and of other four brothers, mighty in valor as in devotion and loyalty, the peerless Character of Krishna, unsurpassed in human wisdom; and not less brilliant, the characters of the women - the stately queen Gandhari, the loving mother Kunti , the ever devoted and all-suffering Draupadi - these and hundreds of characters of this epic have been the cherished heritage of the whole Hindu world for the last several thousands of year and form the basis of their thoughts and their moral and ethical ideas. In fact, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata are the two encyclopedias of the ancient A***n life and wisdom, protraying an ideal civilization which humanity has yet to aspire after."
