'Akalbodhan'

In the 'Ramayana', as it goes, Rama went to 'Lanka' to rescue his abducted wife, Sita, from the grip of Ravana, the king of the Demons in Lanka. Before starting for his battle with Ravana, Rama wanted the blessings of Devi Durga . He came to know that the Goddess would be pleased only if she is worshipped with one hundred 'NeelKamal' or blue lotuses. Rama, after travelling the whole world, could gather only ninety nine of them. He finally decided to offer one of his eyes, which resembled blue lotuses. Durga, being pleased with the devotion of Rama, appeared before him and blessed him. The battle started on the 'Saptami' and Ravana was finally killed on the 'Sandhikshan' i.e. the crossover period between Ashtami (the next day) and Navami (the day after). Ravana was cremated on Dashami. Since the period of this worship was different from the conventional period (during the spring - 'Basanta'), this puja is also known as 'Akal-Bodhan' or a worship (Bodhan) in an unconventional time (A-Kaal).

Durga Puja organisers in Bengal to get Rs 25,000 bonanza 2019

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday said that instead of Rs 10,000, the state government will now give Rs 25,000 Durga Puja organisers in the state.

Mamata Banerjee's announcement means there will be a 150% hike in the grant given to the clubs organising Durga Puja in West Bengal.

"I've decided to raise the amount from Rs 10,000 to Rs 25,000. I've already discussed this with the state Finance Minister Amit Mitra. We shall give it to all Puja organisers," Mamata Banerjee said while addressing her annual meeting with all Puja committee's at Kolkata's Netaji Indoor stadium.

Mamata Banerjee also announced a special grant of Rs 5,000 to those puja pandals organised by women.

"A special grant of Rs 5,000 to those pujas that are organised by women. This is to promote our heritage, tourism, culture and community development," Mamata Banerjee said.

With the announcement, Mamata Banerjee said she won't allow any politics over Durga Puja.

"We shall once again prove that we won't allow Bengal to be tarnished. We won't allow any politics over Durga Puja," Mamata Banerjee said.

The announcement of ex-gratia for Durga Puja organisers amounting to Rs 28 crore was made for the first time last year. The increased amount means it will cost the government exchequer Rs 70 crore this year.

Kumars are the god makers

Every year, months before autumn, Kumortuli in Kolkata comes to life. Artists and idol makers start shaping idols for the festival, the high point in every Bengali's year, Durga Puja. These are the idols that are going to come to life and be witness to countless prayers, tears, smiles, appreciation, and laughter. Ironically, these kumars are the god makers, the ones who birth the idols, which are then "brought to life" by a priest during the five-day festivities. Much effort goes into making these idols for Durga Puja: the weather needs to be right for the idols to dry, the designs need to be contemporary, yet traditional, and the artists deal with multiple orders from all over the country with a strict delivery deadline.
