ICAF Presents - “The China Affair: a long term Entanglement - A life in Porcelain across cultures”
A Presentation by Felicity Aylieff
18th March
7:30 PM
Felicity Aylieff is one of the UK’s most innovative contemporary artists working in clay. She established her reputation for large-scale sculptural ceramics at the Royal College of Art in 1996. A decade later, an “incredibly liberating” residency in Jingdezhen, China, the historic centre of porcelain production, marked the beginning of a series of monumental vessels, the largest of which now stands over five metres high.
Returning each summer since that first residency, Aylieff has developed a contemporary interpretation of traditional Chinese porcelain techniques, particularly cobalt Blue and White painting and enamel Fencai decoration. The strong relationships she has built with porcelain factories in Jingdezhen have enabled her to work at an unprecedented scale. Through this rich cultural exchange, she has forged a confident and distinctive ceramic language rooted in both innovation and tradition.
Felicity has taught Ceramics & Glass at the Royal College of Art for over 25 years.
