Today is the 117th birth anniversary of Pankaj Kumar Mullick. To commemorate the day and to celebrate the genius of this legendary singer-composer-actor, whose works enthralled audiences across the globe, here is an audio-visual presentation focusing on his immense contribution to the realm of Indian films, titled - PANKAJ MULLICK: The Reel Story.
In memory of the first music director to be awarded the Dada Saheb Phalke Puraskar, the country’s highest award given to film personalities, here is my humble tribute.
I have always felt blessed to be his grandson, not only because he was a man of immeasurable talent but because of the kind of man he was - principled, disciplined, hardworking and above all compassionate, generous and extremely humble.
From Dadubhai to Dadu …

Just when I had my back to the wall
I could hear Destiny’s loud call
She pleaded - Do not give in to fright
Instead, put up your best fight
Because in the grand arena of Life
There will always be gloom and strife
And you can only find happiness
If you can truly beat back sadness
With courage, endurance and patience
The ingredients of survival’s real essence

A little more than three decades back, when I was in school, little did I realise that a day would come when I would be talking about my life and my experiences while addressing an august gathering comprising the Principal, Vice Principal, Reverend Fathers, respected teachers and the current students of St. Xavier’s Collegiate School along with the Honorary Secretary and fellow members of our alumni association (ALSOC). As the Chief-Guest and Keynote Speaker during the sacrosanct ALSOC Day commemoration, that is precisely what happened to me. I cannot say that this was a dream come true, because honestly, I really did not even dare to dream about this. I cannot put into words just how overwhelmed I became with joy and how deeply moved and humbled I felt. Saying that this was a proud moment in my life would be a gross understatement. I feel truly blessed and extremely fortunate to be feted in this manner. My heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved in this ... thank you

One of the most memorable moments of my life happened about a month ago when the current Principal of our Alma Mater - St. Xavier’s Collegiate School, Kolkata, felicitated me. To be recognised by one’s own school is probably one of the most significant moments in anyone’s life. It also happened to be on a day when I as the inaugural Convener of the Cultural Committee of ALSOC (our alumni association) hosted the first programme of our Cultural Series. What made the occasion even more special was that the programme was a tribute to my maternal grandfather, the legendary singer-composer-actor Pankaj Mullick. During the programme, my wife Jhinuk sang my grandfather’s timeless compositions while I narrated relevant anecdotes.
It was really special for me …

The 27th September issue of the renowned Bengali film-magazine Anandalok, from the ABP stable, carries a 40 page story on Mahishasuramardini which throws light on various aspects of this legendary radio-programme, currently in its 90th year. A veritable treasure trove of information and rare images, this issue is truly a collector’s item. The Anandalok issue comprises, among others, a six page article written by me titled - Amar Dadu, Pankaj Mullick. In this article, I write about Pankaj Mullick, the man, more than Pankaj Mullick, the artiste. Through the article, I reflect on his exemplary qualities, his consummate discipline, his exceptional hard-work and above all his impeccable humility. This post features the cover of the magazine and snapshots of my article (pages 28 to 33).
Corrigendum: The bottom right-hand-side photograph on page 30 is of my maternal grandfather Pankaj Mullick and the actress Chandrabati Debi and not of my maternal grandmother as has been incorrectly mentioned in the caption. My grandmother, Annapurna Mullick’s photographs can be seen on page 32
Those interested in the history of the evergreen Mahalaya radio programme Mahishasuramardini can pick up a copy of this issue.
