Punalur Rajan - Legends on

Death is sometimes the last and best platform for a forgotten artist to receive due recognition. Sadly, it was no different for this legend. RIP Sir.

His portraits of Vaikom Muhammad Basheer, M. T. Vasudevan Nair and Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai will take every Malayali back to the time of those literary giants – a time when art was a medium to express oneself rather than to be famous and recognized. He was particularly fond of Basheer and the pictures speak for them self.

Even after burning a lot of his works due to depression and tough times, his archive houses one of the biggest documentations of Kerala history. The images are so lifelike, a true lover of the art can feel them self between Basheer and Thakazhi getting to know them better. Expressions and dialogues gravitated towards the viewer.

While the framing is beyond impeccable, closeups and over-exposing were perhaps his photographic signatures.

His viewfinder witnessed the rise and growth of the Communist Party in Kerala. This made him an ardent fan of C. Achutha Menon & Thoppil Bhasi. While he spoke so highly of these political and literary legends, he may not have realized that he himself was nothing short of inspirational.

While he never complained of not being recognized, he felt that his works were not being utilized in the best interest and manner. One of his wishes that he realized would never be fulfilled was to make a movie.

You are being missed dear legend.

Raghu Rai - Legends on

“Photography is my religion” he once said proudly in a country where finding a place to worship is easier than finding a shelter to ward off scorching sunlight. To be called a protégé of Henri Cartier-Bresson (legend of legends and father of photojournalism) and being incorporated into the most prestigious firm any true photojournalist would dream to be in – Magnum Pro are just icing on the cake.

He focused on daily life moments and captured them with grace. This made him express his dislike towards selfies as he believed they never made people think beyond themselves. The photograph of 2 people reading newspapers during the rush hour at the Churchgate Station in Mumbai using long exposure technique is a visual treat.

While his coverage of Mother Teresa & Dalai Lama are stunning, his work on the Bhopal Gas Tragedy is the most significant. The intensity of those photographs that makes one feel stuck in time with the victims. The image of a child with inside-out eyes being partly buried told the story of how horrific and saddening the tragedy was to the world.

You Sir is an inspiration for every photographer in India. You are a Legend.

Vivian Maier - Legends on

The mysterious nanny whose photography works were discovered 2 years after her death by a real-estate agent who bought a huge set of undeveloped film rolls at an auction. Her family members were unaware of her love for clicking pictures. The photographs are considered one of a kind.

She intentionally hid her works from the world because she did not yearn for fame and recognition. A concept hard to digest in the age of Instagram & Facebook. True passion is about enjoying it for yourself and being happy doing it. Her photographs resonated with anyone who wanted to be free from the pressure of society and be independent from expectations. The subjects were primarily children, the poor and elderly while concentrating highly on the urban human landscape.

We live in a time when aesthetics is given more importance over originality, concept, and story. In a way Photoshop has killed photography due to its ability to alter the colour palette and emphasize it. The best storytellers are those who captured a colourful life into a black and white film roll. Which is why black and white photographs spoke better stories. Vivian Maier’s stories have gone on to inspire people beyond generations. Her photographs are being exhibited in major shows today.

She never wanted to prove herself to anyone and that made her an original – ‘a nanny who happened to take photographs in her free time’

Ma’am, you are the most passionate photographer this world has seen. It makes you nothing less than a legend.

The origin.

1947 media as an idea took shape during our last year in college. Yes, the cliché BTech life – where every 3rd person you met was into ‘short film making’.
Self-proclaimed directors who would watch too many classic movies and be inspired by the likes of Padhmarajan, Dileesh Pothan and Martin Scorsese, script writers who would read and quote M.T, Paul Schrader and Ingmar Bergman, cinematographers with entry level Canon DSLRs trying to replicate the works of Santhosh Sivan and Roger Deakins. But the biggest asset was a group of friends who criticized openly and supported unconditionally.

We want to create a platform where true talent and creativity can be expressed, to help others achieve what we were once too scared to go after and settled for lesser. The name 1947media is a true testament to what we believe in – to express any kind of art through creativity and freedom.

തുടക്കം

1947 media ഒരു ആശയം ആയി തുടങ്ങുന്നത് കോളേജിലെ അവസാന നാളുകളിലാണ്. എല്ലാ ബീ.ടെക്കുകരെയും പോലെ കാണുന്നവരെല്ലാം ഷോർട്ട്‌ ഫിലിം എടുക്കാൻ നടക്കുന്നവർ, പത്മരാജന്റെയും, ദിലീഷ് പൊത്തന്റെയും, മാർട്ടിൻ സ്കോർസെസിയുടെയുമെല്ലാം സിനിമകൾ കണ്ട് ഭാവിയിൽ സംവിധായകർ ആവാൻ കൊതിച്ചിരുന്നവർ, എം.ടിയേയും, പോൾ ഷ്രേഡറേയും, ഇങ്ങ്മാർ ബെർഗമാനേയും ഒക്കെ വായിച്ച് തിരക്കഥാകൃത്താവാൻ തുനിഞ്ഞവർ, DSLR ക്യാമറ കൈയ്യിൽ കിട്ടിയതും സന്തോഷ് ശിവനേയും, റോജർ ഡീക്കിൻസിനെയും പയറ്റാൻ ശ്രമിച്ചവർ. പക്ഷേ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ സമ്പാദ്യം മുഖത്ത് നോക്കി വിമർശിക്കാൻ മടിയില്ലാത്ത എന്നാൽ ചങ്ക് പറിച്ച് സഹായിക്കാനും മടിയില്ലാത്ത സുഹൃത്തുക്കൾ തന്നെയാണ്.

സത്യസന്ധമായി കഴിവും ക്രിയാത്മകതയും പ്രകടിപ്പിക്കാനുള്ള ഒരു പ്ലാറ്റ്ഫോം നിർമിക്കാനുള്ള മോഹത്തിൽ നിന്ന് പിറന്നതാണ് 1947 മീഡിയ. ഞങ്ങൾ പിന്തുടരാൻ മടിച്ച പാത സ്വീകരിക്കാൻ മറ്റുള്ളവർക്ക് പ്രചോദനവും സഹായവും നൽകാൻ ഒരു വേദി. 1947 മീഡിയ എന്ന പേര് തന്നെ ഞങ്ങൾ വിശ്വസിക്കുന്ന മൂല്യങ്ങളുടെ ഒരു സാക്ഷിപത്രമാണ്- ഏത് കലയും സ്വതന്ത്രവും ക്രിയാത്മകവുമായി അവതരിപ്പിക്കാൻ.

Almost everyone of us are feeling low about the recent happenings in Kerala. With the Covid, floods, landslides and plane crash. We figured that all of needed some lifting of spirit. Hope this helps, sincerely.

നിസ്സഹായരായിരിക്കുന്നവർക്ക് നേരെ നീളുന്ന ഒരു സഹായഹസ്തം...
വിറങ്ങലിച്ച ശരീരത്തെ തണുപ്പകറ്റുന്ന ഒരു തുണിക്കഷ്ണം...
വിശപ്പിന് നേരെ നീട്ടുന്ന ഒരു ഭക്ഷണപ്പൊതി...
പ്രത്യാശ നൽകുന്ന അപരിചിതമായ ഒരു പുഞ്ചിരി...

ഒന്നും ഈ നിമിഷത്തിൽ അവസാനിക്കുന്നില്ല, എന്ന് ഓർമ്മപ്പെടുത്തുന്ന എല്ലാം, എല്ലാം പ്രതീക്ഷയാണ്... മലയാളിയാണ്.

It was just another evening; we were at our usual hangout place, enjoying our hot chai onlooking a busy street. The roads were lit by incandescent lights, people moving briskly & the loud chatter of the crowd in the backdrop.
That’s when a girl probably in her early pre-teens, wearing shabby clothes came to us asking alms. We were skeptical about giving her money and instead took her to a hotel and ordered a parcel. She asked us if we could get her one more packet for her younger sibling and granny, which we did!
As always, our curiosity kicked in, and we couldn't resist asking her whereabouts. She told us that she stays underneath an over-bridge with her younger sister and granny. Her dad was a rag picker who would come visit them once a month and give them whatever money he has, which apparently isn't much. Basically, they spent most part of a month begging to survive. Her parcel arrived, and she left us gifting us a smile and a glow in her eyes.
Like most people, we were disturbed hearing her plight. We quietly finished our tea and began walking back to the parking lot.
At the entrance of the seemingly deserted parking lot, we saw a man in his 70’s selling pakkodas & other fried snacks. His eyes spoke for his mental agony & weariness, it was quite evident that the man hasn’t eaten anything from the morning.
With watery eyes, he asked us if we could buy something from him. It seems, because of the pandemic, people were afraid to buy from him. Sniveling he said, he had a family to feed. We bought whatever we could from him and left. We knew it was the hunger that he was trying to satiate, that gave him hope that he could earn some money.
There was an uncomfortable silence among us, and that's when it hit us hard.
We realized that the girl we saw on the streets and the man on the parking lot was no different. They were two faces of the same coin. Two different stories connected by the thread of hunger & the fight for survival! They are the manifestation of hunger and poverty, the faces of the marginalized sect living around us. The people we often fail to see!
On this 73rd Independence Day, we hope that we, as a society, gain independence from the ignorance that's clouding us from seeing the cry for help around us.

1947 media is a fraternity of individuals who chose art as the path to quench our never-ending thirst to experience the unexplored realm. For us, art is a sanctum that constantly reminds us to break the shackles that weigh our wings down. It is the semblance of our souls’ longing for freedom, a bulwark against stagnation! We will never criticize but appreciate and advocate the freedom of expression.
We will only produce curated content and not congest your feed for the sake of reach. Just a group of people trying to speak their minds as truly as they can.
