WARMING MEMORIES..
I can still see my mam, coming in from work in the winter, freezing cold.
Big coat off, zip up bootees off, slippers on.
She’d go in the scullery, fill the kettle and put it on the gas stove for a cuppa, teapot always warmed first with boiling water and left to stand, a couple of scoops of tea leaves out of the ‘jap’ tin tea caddy, teacosy on the teapot and left to ‘mast’, (maybe that’s a Tyneside expression) never stirred, she’d say,
‘Stir tea, you stir trouble!’ .. (her friends would often ask her to read the tea leaves in the bottom of their cups 🙂) and then she’d stand next to the hearth, back to the fire, skirt hitched up to get warm..
No worries about getting those corn beef legs, just the sheer bliss and heat off that coal fire …🔥 ..
