AN OPEN LETTER FROM THE DARJEELING HILLS (ENGLISH)

Elections Without Power: Why the Darjeeling Hills Feel Cheated, Not Represented

Every few years, elections arrive in the Darjeeling Hills like a badly timed festival. Banners go up. Leaders arrive from the plains. Promises are repeated with fresh dates and familiar words.
And people ask the same question they have been asking for years:

What exactly are we voting for?
Not out of ignorance.
Out of exhaustion.

A Problem “Under Discussion” for Decades

The Central Government has appointed an interlocutor to address the long-standing political issue of the Darjeeling Hills. On paper, this sounds like progress.
In reality, it feels like déjà vu.

The State Government has challenged the appointment. The Centre has not clearly explained what the interlocutor can do, what authority he carries, or what outcome is even being considered. Once again, the Hills are being told to wait—while elections are just round the corner.

If this issue is serious enough to need an interlocutor, then it is serious enough to be resolved.
If it is not, then stop pretending.

The GTA Exists — Power Does Not

Let us state a truth that is often blurred deliberately:

The Gorkhaland Territorial Administration is not a constitutional body.

It exists because the State allowed it to exist. Its powers exist only as long as the State permits them. They can be reduced, delayed, or denied without any constitutional obstacle.
Yet this same body is held up as “self-governance.”

What kind of self-governance survives on permission?

The GTA has sabhasads, departments, offices—and no real authority. It carries responsibility without power, blame without control. It is local enough to absorb anger, but weak enough to avoid accountability from above.

Two Power Centres, One Confused Public

At the same time, the Darjeeling Hills continue to elect MLAs to the West Bengal Assembly. These MLAs campaign on development, speak of authority, and promise solutions—many of which fall outside their actual control.

So who governs the Hills?
The GTA, which cannot act freely?
Or the Assembly, which governs from a distance?

This is not democracy.
This is confusion maintained as a system.

When Elections Lose Meaning

People in the Hills are told to vote responsibly, participate actively, and believe in democracy. But democracy demands clarity.
When roads collapse, when landslides kill, when youth migrate, when hospitals fail—who answers?

The State points to the GTA.
The GTA points to lack of funds.
Officials point to rules.

Responsibility keeps moving.
Accountability never settles.
Over time, people stop asking who to blame.
They start asking why they should vote at all.

That is not apathy.
That is betrayal.

Enough of the Pretence

The people of the Darjeeling Hills have the right to ask uncomfortable questions:

If the GTA exists, why is it not empowered?
If the Assembly governs, why keep a parallel body at all?

If an interlocutor has been appointed, what exactly is he allowed to solve?

These are not extremist demands.
They are democratic demands.

Either give the Hills a real governing body with real power.
Or admit that the current system exists only to manage anger, not solve problems.

Democracy cannot survive on symbols forever.
And the frustration in the Hills is not fading — it is accumulating.

The tragedy is not that people are angry.
The tragedy is that they have every reason to be.

📢 We are asked to vote.
But who actually holds power in the Hills?

Two systems.
No clarity.
No accountability.

If a governing body exists, why is it powerless?
If the Assembly governs, why keep a parallel setup?

This election season, the Hills deserve answers — not slogans.
Because elections are coming.
Clarity is not.

The Hills live under two systems — and control over none.
That is not democracy.
That is confusion by design.

Read this. Share it.
Because pretending everything is normal is no longer an option.

हरेक केही वर्षमा दार्जिलिङ पहाडमा चुनाव आउँछ—कहिल्यै नमिल्ने चाडझैँ। ब्यानर टाँसिन्छन्। नेताहरू पहाड उक्लिन्छन्। पुराना वाचा नयाँ शब्दमा दोहोरिन्छन्।
र मानिसहरूले उही प्रश्न फेरि सोध्छन्—
हामी वास्तवमा केका लागि भोट हाल्दैछौं?
अज्ञानताबाट होइन।
थकानबाट।

वर्षौँदेखि ‘विचाराधीन’ राखिएको समस्या

केन्द्र सरकारले दार्जिलिङ पहाडको दीर्घकालीन राजनीतिक समस्यालाई सम्बोधन गर्न एक जना संवादकर्ता नियुक्त गरेको छ। कागजमा हेर्दा यो सकारात्मक कदम जस्तो देखिन्छ।
तर व्यवहारमा, यो नयाँ कुरा होइन।

राज्य सरकारले यस नियुक्तिलाई चुनौती दिएको छ। केन्द्र सरकारले संवादकर्ताको अधिकार, दायरा र उद्देश्य अझै स्पष्ट पारेको छैन। नतिजा—फेरि उही अवस्था: घोषणा धेरै, स्पष्टता शून्य।

यदि यो समस्या संवादकर्ताको स्तरको हो भने, समाधान गर्ने इमानदारी पनि हुनुपर्छ।
यदि होइन भने, नाटक बन्द हुनुपर्छ।
GTA छ — तर सत्ता छैन
एउटा तथ्य स्पष्ट भन्नुपर्छ—
GTA (गोर्खाल्यान्ड टेरिटोरियल एडमिनिस्ट्रेशन) संवैधानिक निकाय होइन।
यो संस्था राज्य सरकारले बनाएको कानुनबाट अस्तित्वमा आएको हो। यसको शक्ति संविधानबाट होइन, राज्यको निर्णयबाट आउँछ। चाहियो भने घटाइन्छ, रोकिन्छ, वा कागजमै सीमित राखिन्छ।

तर यही संस्थालाई ‘स्वशासन’ भनेर देखाइन्छ।
अनुमतिमा चल्ने शासनलाई स्वशासन भन्न मिल्छ?
GTA सँग सभासद छन्, विभाग छन्, कार्यालय छन्—तर निर्णायक शक्ति छैन। यो जनताको रिस थाम्ने संरचना बनेको छ, तर माथिबाट कसैले जवाफदेही लिनु पर्दैन।

दुई सत्ता केन्द्र, एक भ्रमित जनता

यसैबीच, दार्जिलिङ पहाडले पश्चिम बंगाल विधानसभा का लागि विधायक पनि निर्वाचित गर्छ। उनीहरू विकास र अधिकारको कुरा गर्छन्—तर धेरै निर्णय उनीहरूको नियन्त्रणभन्दा बाहिर हुन्छ।
त्यसो भए शासन कसले गरिरहेको छ?
शक्तिहीन GTA ले?
वा टाढाबाट नीति बनाउने विधानसभा ले?
यो लोकतन्त्र होइन।
यो सचेत रूपमा कायम राखिएको अस्पष्ट व्यवस्था हो।

🛑 BREAKING: Air Ambulance Crashes in Jharkhand; All 7 On Board Killed

Chatra District, Jharkhand – Feb 24, 2026:
A Redbird Airways Pvt Ltd air ambulance en route from Ranchi to New Delhi crashed in Kasariya/Bariatu Panchayat, Simaria block of Chatra district on Monday evening, killing all seven people aboard.

The Beechcraft C90 air ambulance (registration VT-AJV) took off from Ranchi’s Birsa Munda Airport at approximately 7:11 pm IST. (NDTV)

Around 20–23 minutes after takeoff, the aircraft lost communication and radar contact with Kolkata Air Traffic Control.

📍 It’s February. Not Monsoon.
And that’s exactly why we’re talking about landslides now.

Every year, the same story in the hills:
• Roads crack
• Drainage stays blocked
• Slopes weaken
• Authorities “wake up” only after damage

By April–May, when rains arrive, it’s already too late.
Repairs then are not prevention — they’re apologies.

Landslides don’t start with rain.
They start with neglect, delay, and silence.

This is the time for:
✔️ Road inspections
✔️ Drainage clearance
✔️ Slope stabilisation
✔️ Preventive action

Not after lives are disrupted, people displaced.
Not after ambulances are stuck, houses collapse.
Not after headlines ask “who is responsible?”

Fix roads before monsoon.
Not after tragedy.

Robodog, Imported: Credit, Local. 🤡

In a spectacular display of "Make in China, Claim in India," Galgotias University recently unveiled a shiny robot dog—dramatically presenting it as an 'in-house innovation.'

Minor detail: the robodog is widely known to be Chinese-made.
Major detail: the internet exists.

From press photos to proud declarations, the performance had all the ingredients of a tech thriller—except the tech part. What followed was predictable: curious netizens, a quick reverse image search, and the robodog rolling straight into embarrassment.

This wasn’t innovation. This was 'import–rebrand–pose.'

In a country bursting with actual student talent, jugaad brilliance, and real research struggles, passing off a factory-built gadget as homegrown genius isn’t just cringe - it’s insulting. To students. To researchers. And to anyone who thinks education should be about honesty, not optics.

🗻 When India Crashed into Asia: The Birth of the Himalayas

The Himalayas are among the youngest and highest mountain ranges on Earth, formed by powerful movements of the Earth’s crust. Their origin lies in the long-term collision between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, a process that reshaped Asia’s geography. This ongoing geological interaction continues to influence earthquakes, climate, rivers, and human life across the region.

1. Indian Plate 🇮🇳
The Indian Plate broke away from the ancient supercontinent Gondwana and moved rapidly northward. Its steady motion set the stage for one of the most dramatic continental collisions in Earth’s history.

2. Eurasian Plate 🇪🇺
The Eurasian Plate forms much of Europe and Asia and is composed of thick continental crust. When the Indian Plate collided with it, neither plate easily sank, leading to intense compression.

3. Tethys Sea (Ancient) 🌊
The Tethys Sea once lay between India and Asia, collecting vast layers of sediments. These sediments were later squeezed, folded, and lifted during the collision.

4. Fold Mountains (Himalayas) 🗻
The Himalayas are classic fold mountains formed by compression of continental crust. Layers of rock bent and buckled upward, creating towering peaks like Mount Everest.

5. Tibetan Plateau
Behind the Himalayas lies the Tibetan Plateau, the highest and largest plateau on Earth. It formed as the Eurasian crust thickened and rose due to the ongoing collision.

6. Collision / Suture Zone 💥
The suture zone marks the exact line where the Indian and Eurasian plates fused. It represents the closure of the Tethys Sea and the beginning of mountain building.

7. Ongoing Convergence & Earthquakes 🌏
The Indian Plate still moves northward by a few centimetres each year. This causes continued uplift of the Himalayas and frequent earthquakes in the region.

Earthquake 🌍 shock.

Feb 06, 1:09am - Seismic activity near Sikkim in the early hours of February 6, 2026 (IST).
According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), India’s official seismology authority, several earthquakes occurred in quick succession around 1:00–1:30 AM IST:
Magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck Gyalshing, Sikkim at 01:09:27 IST (epicenter in/near Gyalshing district).
Magnitude 3.1 in the Gangtok area at 01:15:29 IST.

A smaller Magnitude 2.2 in Mangan, Sikkim shortly after at 01:23:39 IST.
Some sources (like Volcano Discovery) initially reported a possible Magnitude ~4.6–4.7 event around that time near Namchi/Gyalshing (felt widely in parts of northern Bihar, West Bengal, and nearby regions due to shallow depth), but the NCS listing appears to be the authoritative local measurement at 4.5.

These were shallow-depth events (typically ~10 km), which is why they were felt more strongly in the epicentral area and surrounding regions, including parts of northern West Bengal (you're in Siliguri, so tremors may have been noticeable there if strong enough).
No major damage or casualties have been reported from these events so far, as magnitudes in the 4.5 range usually cause light to moderate shaking but limited structural damage unless buildings are poorly constructed.

The Himalayan region (including Sikkim) is seismically very active due to the ongoing collision between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.
