This is an invitation to participate in "Immersive workshop on characterization in creative arts". There will be eight participants all of whom have enough understanding of their vision from the background of art and literature; who will take part in an experiential workshop on characterisation while living amongst and learning from an indigenous tribe of the solagar and Irula community residing in a region of Tamil Nadu.
One among the eight participants has to volunteer to document the workshop at times of necessity with their own equipments.
About the workshop :
Get to spend a week living and learning in a natural pristine habitat, with the members of an indigenous tribe belonging to the solagar and Irula community of Tamil Nadu. Experiencing a simpler lifestyle close to nature unaffected by modernisation will enable you get trained and skilled in the actor's craft of getting into the skin of a character through observation, imitation, internalisation and other processes. Practice and train yourself in the process of unearthing the various facets and layers of the chosen character. Delve deeper into the process and into yourself, using tools and experiential methods. Guided and facilitated by experienced theatre actor, director and trainer Sugumar Shanmugam.
This is a workshop open only to selected participants, since it requires a passion for learning, training and flexibility in terms of living conditions for the duration of the workshop. Food and accommodation will be basic. Access to mobile phones and gadgets will be very limited. Participants will have to be sensitive to the people they interact and live with. The workshop is provided as an offering, and there is no participation/tuition fee charged. However, participants will have to take care of the travel and food expenses on their own. The location of the workshop and further details will be shared in due course. Workshop will be held within this month. The probable dates of the workshop will be announced shortly.

About the facilitator:
Sugumar Shanmugam is a contemporary theatre director and actor trainer, and the founder of Meikuzhal Theatre group in Pondicherry. He has worked in over 52 productions as an actor, directed 8 plays and has written 2 plays. His major area of research and specialisation is characterisation and actor's bio-psychology. He is currently pursuing Ph.D in Theatre from Department of Performing Arts, Pondicherry University. He has a Master's degree in Drama and Theatre from Pondicherry University, and has completed a one-year acting diploma course in National School of Drama, Bangalore.
