SHORT STORY OF ZOOM ROCK GARDEN
*****************************
– Where Nature Meets Adventure
Nestled in the beautiful hills of Soreng District, Sikkim, India, Zoom Village is a developing rural destination known for its natural beauty, peaceful surroundings and agricultural lifestyle. The village is traditionally dependent on farming, with ginger, orange, millet and pulses among its important local crops.
With improving road connectivity and growing interest in rural and adventure tourism, Zoom is gradually emerging as a promising destination for visitors seeking nature, culture and authentic village experiences.
The Story of Zoom Rock Garden
Located at Khaling, Zoom Village, Zoom Rock Garden is one of the village's most promising tourism attractions. The idea of developing this natural rock landscape began nearly two decades ago through the vision of the late Chandra Bahadur Rai, a former Zilla Panchayat of Zoom.
Although the project could not be fully completed at that time, the vision has continued. Today, local youth, Panchayats, community leaders and elected representatives are working towards giving Zoom Rock Garden a new direction and a new identity as a destination for nature and adventure tourism.
Spread across a remarkable natural landscape of rocks, forests and open spaces, the Rock Garden offers opportunities for sightseeing, rock climbing, bouldering, mountain biking and other outdoor activities.
From Village Tourism to Adventure Tourism
Zoom is also developing as a village tourism destination. Several homestays are now welcoming visitors and offering an opportunity to experience local hospitality, food and culture.
Rai Homestay
A peaceful homestay surrounded by a beautiful natural environment. Visitors can enjoy quiet mornings, sunrise views and panoramic views of the surrounding hills.
Side Way Homestay
Offering a spacious courtyard, modern facilities and a peaceful setting, this homestay is suitable for visitors looking to relax and enjoy outdoor activities such as a bonfire.
Apun Ko Garden
Known for its colourful flowers and welcoming atmosphere, Apun Ko Garden offers traditional food, local cuisine and the opportunity to experience the local drink Tongba. The garden has also developed into a homestay destination.
Places to Explore Around Zoom
Anganey Dhunga
Located near the border of Chakung and Zoom, Anganey Dhunga is a large natural rock formation offering impressive views of the surrounding landscape. From this area, visitors can enjoy views towards parts of South Sikkim, including Samdruptse, Siddheshwar Dham (Char Dham), Kalimpong and parts of Darjeeling. The approximate elevation is around 1,500–1,700 metres above sea level.
Durpiney Dara
Rich in local stories and legends, Durpiney Dara is another scenic viewpoint around Zoom. Traditionally associated with the observation of distant areas during earlier times, the viewpoint today offers beautiful mountain scenery, including views of Khangchendzonga during clear mornings.
A New Chapter in Adventure Tourism
Zoom Rock Garden is increasingly becoming a place where nature meets adventure.
In March 2026, Boulder Clash, an outdoor bouldering competition organised by Zabarvan Extreme in partnership with climber Tenzin Jammy Jamyang, brought climbers to Zoom. The event explored the area's extensive natural boulders and rock faces across a 26-acre landscape, opening new possibilities for climbing and adventure tourism.
The development of mountain biking is bringing growing international attention to Zoom. In collaboration with Zoom GPU, Zabarvan Extreme is organizing the International Downhill MTB Series 2026, to be held at Zoom Village from 7th to 11th October 2026, featuring an exciting downhill course set amidst the forests and magnificent mountain landscape of Sikkim.
The competition will welcome international athletes from Australia, Iran, Brazil, Italy, The Czech Republic, Taiwan and Nepal, along with talented riders from various states across India.
This international sporting event marks an important new chapter for Zoom, creating a platform for adventure sports while showcasing the natural beauty, challenging terrain and tourism potential of Zoom Rock Garden and Sikkim to the world.
