On the 420th anniversary of the sacred Shaheedi of Sahib Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the official management of Paramsthaan Baba Ramdas Ji Maharaj (Village Ghurial, District Jalandhar, Punjab) joins the Sangat in remembrance, reflection, and prayer. Guru Sahib’s Shaheedi calls us to contemplate a strength deeper than anger: the strength of a consciousness so firmly rooted in “Naam” that suffering could not turn it toward hatred, fear, or vengeance. In his divine bani, Guru Sahib Ji teaches, “Tera keea meetha laagai,” that the Divine Will becomes sweet to the heart that rests in remembrance, and elsewhere declares, “Naa ko bairee, nahee bigaanaa,” that no one is an enemy and no one is a stranger. This is not indifference to cruelty, nor silence before injustice. It is the refusal to let cruelty reproduce itself within us. Sahib Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji’s life and Shaheedi reveal that resistance may be unwavering without becoming hateful, that humility need not become submission, and that acceptance of “Hukam” does not require the abandonment of truth or human dignity. When the One Light lives within all, another person’s suffering can never be foreign to us, and the service of humanity becomes inseparable from devotion to the Divine.
As we commemorate Guru Sahib Ji, may we not remember his Shaheedi only as an event of the past, but receive its living challenge: to relinquish “haumai”, resentment, prejudice, and narrowness; to stand beside those who are oppressed or forgotten; and to meet the hardships of our own time with “sehaj”, courage, compassion, and an unshaken commitment to justice.
May Guru Sahib Ji’s bani soften our hearts, strengthen our resolve, and guide us to see no one as an enemy or stranger, but to honour the Divine Light and dignity within all.
