Titled: Milky way ! (DARJA x Raja Ravi Varma)
I still remember the day when my uncle voiced his issue with one of the women breastfeeding during a 'kirtan' at his house. Really, how could she, at such a pious event, tend to her hungry child? She should have waited it out and let the baby cry for hours. Or she shouldn't have come to the kirtan at all!
What's worse? That extremely uncomfortable stare women get when they're breastfeeding.
Did you know, that according to a The Times of India report, only 55% of newborns are exclusively breastfed for six months? Breastfeeding in India is a taboo, a huge one at it. And it may take generations to educate and sensitize our population. But, surprise surprise, this taboo is one of the prominent barriers to breastfeeding. Its sad!
While I made this series to take a dig at men (and make them uncomfortable) but as I'm making these art pieces, I realise educating y'all maybe a better bet. Though I will put up some cringeworthy posts for you, such as a close up of our armpit hair. But for now, PLEASE breastfeeding. Do it one woman at a time, but just try.
And to my uncomfortable uncle, next time if you have an issue with a woman feeding her child in public, please don't look! No one is forcing you to see her. Just mind your own business and let her mind hers. :)
