94% Survival Rate Gives Longding’s Cherry Blossom Vision a Strong Start

LONGDING, August 2:
Nearly a month after 2,000 cherry blossom saplings were distributed for the beautification of Longding town, around 94 per cent are reported to have survived and are showing healthy growth, according to an assessment of the plantation initiative.

The saplings were distributed on June 29, 2026, under an initiative led by MLA Thangwang Wangham to introduce cherry blossoms as part of Longding’s town beautification efforts.

The reported survival rate means that approximately 1,880 of the 2,000 saplings are currently surviving, while around 120 may not have survived. At this early stage, however, the figure represents an initial survival assessment rather than the final success rate of the plantation programme.

The health of the saplings will depend on continued care, including adequate watering, protection from damage and appropriate maintenance during the coming months. Their long-term survival will be a more meaningful indicator of the success of the initiative.

Cherry blossom trees also require several years of growth before reaching maturity and producing significant blooms. Consequently, the present condition of the saplings offers an early indication, rather than an immediate measure, of what the initiative could eventually achieve.

The plantation drive has nevertheless generated interest in the possibility of giving Longding a distinctive green character through cherry blossom cultivation. If the saplings continue to survive and mature, the initiative could gradually contribute to a visible transformation of the town’s landscape.

For now, the reported 94 per cent survival rate marks an encouraging first stage. The more important test will be whether the saplings can be sustained through the coming seasons and eventually grow into healthy, flowering trees.

Operation Arunoday achieves major milestone as expedition summits Bajrang Peak

The teams of Gajraj Corps, Sela Warriors, and the National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (NIMAS) have successfully summited Bajrang Peak (5,583 metres) via the historic Thingbu route under Operation Arunoday, marking a significant milestone for Arunachal Pradesh’s frontier adventure tourism initiative.

Sharing the achievement on X, Chief Minister Pema Khandu congratulated the expedition teams, stating that the successful ascent demonstrates “how civil-military synergy can transform remote frontiers into hubs of responsible adventure tourism.”

The expedition, flagged off in late June, is aimed at opening the challenging Thingbu–Bajrang Peak route for sustainable trekking while promoting tourism, improving border connectivity, and creating livelihood opportunities for local communities.

The successful summit is expected to strengthen efforts to position Arunachal Pradesh as one of India’s leading destinations for high-altitude adventure tourism.

Bhutan Declines India’s E20 Fuel Offer, Cites Infrastructure Concerns

Thimphu | July 5: Bhutan has declined India’s proposal to supply E20 petrol (20% ethanol-blended fuel), citing concerns over its existing fuel storage infrastructure.
According to Bhutanese authorities, many of the country’s underground fuel storage tanks are old and may not be suitable for ethanol-blended fuel, which is more susceptible to water contamination. As a result, Bhutan has requested that India continue supplying conventional petrol until the necessary infrastructure upgrades are completed.
The decision is being viewed as a technical and logistical one rather than a political move. There is currently no official indication that Bhutan plans to replace Indian fuel imports with supplies from any other country, including China.
India has been progressively introducing E20 fuel as part of its national strategy to reduce crude oil imports and promote cleaner, ethanol-blended fuels.

In a rare gesture of appreciation, an Arunachal MLA Thangwang Wangham chose to personally thank doctors and healthcare workers where they serve. inside the District Hospital, Longding.

Longding, July 1: [Jeewan Wangsu]

Doctors at the District Hospital, Longding, had an unexpected visitor on Wednesday as Longding MLA Thangwang Wangham walked into the hospital to personally wish them on the occasion of National Doctors’ Day.

The visit was not part of any scheduled programme. Instead of a formal function, the MLA spent time interacting with District Medical Officer Shri Dilip Dutta, doctors, and healthcare staff, thanking them for their dedication and listening to the challenges they face while delivering healthcare services in the district.

During the interaction, Wangham acknowledged the commitment of doctors and healthcare workers who continue to serve the people of Longding despite limited resources and demanding conditions. He also assured the medical fraternity that he would continue working, within his capacity, to strengthen healthcare services and address issues affecting the sector.

The surprise visit was warmly received by the hospital staff, many of whom described it as an encouraging gesture of recognition for the work they do every day.

When asked why he chose to visit the hospital instead of attending a formal programme, the MLA replied with a simple message:

“I only did what they deserve. Our doctors and healthcare workers dedicate their lives to serving our people, often under difficult circumstances and without expecting recognition. They deserve our respect, our gratitude, and our full support. If we truly value healthcare, we must first value those who provide it.”

His brief remark reflected the spirit of the visit, a sincere expression of gratitude to the doctors and healthcare workers who remain at the forefront of public service.

The United States has launched another round of military strikes on Iranian targets, intensifying tensions in the Middle East just days after a ceasefire was announced between the two countries.

According to the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), American forces targeted Iranian military infrastructure, including surveillance systems, drone facilities, air defence positions and coastal military assets. The operation came after reports of an Iranian drone attack on a commercial vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, an incident Washington described as a breach of the ceasefire agreement.

U.S. President Donald Trump defended the strikes, accusing Tehran of repeatedly violating the ceasefire and warning that further attacks on American interests or international shipping would be met with a strong response. He said the latest military action was aimed at protecting freedom of navigation through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

Iran, however, has rejected the U.S. allegations. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for attacks targeting what it called the “U.S. terrorist army” in the Gulf, while maintaining its position on regional security and maritime control.

Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts elsewhere in the region also faced a setback after Hezbollah rejected a U.S.-backed framework agreement between Lebanon and Israel announced by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The group vowed to continue its military campaign against Israeli forces despite the proposed framework.

The latest developments have cast fresh doubt over the durability of the ceasefire between Washington and Tehran. With both sides accusing each other of violating the agreement and military operations continuing, concerns are growing that the conflict could widen further, threatening regional stability and global energy supplies routed through the Strait of Hormuz.

U.S. Launches Fresh Strikes on Iran as Ceasefire Comes Under Renewed Strain

Washington says military action followed alleged Iranian attacks in the Gulf, while regional tensions continue to escalate.

The United States has launched a fresh round of military strikes on Iranian targets, raising concerns over the future of the fragile ceasefire between Washington and Tehran.

According to the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), American forces struck multiple Iranian military sites on Sunday, targeting surveillance systems, drone facilities, air defence positions and coastal military assets. The operation came after alleged Iranian drone attacks on commercial shipping in the Gulf, including a vessel transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

U.S. President Donald Trump defended the operation, accusing Iran of repeatedly violating the ceasefire agreement. He said the strikes were intended to deter further attacks on international shipping and warned that the United States would respond decisively to any future violations.

Iran has rejected Washington’s accusations. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for attacks against what it described as the “U.S. terrorist army” in the Gulf, maintaining that its actions were in response to earlier American military operations.

The latest escalation comes amid ongoing disagreements between the two sides over key provisions of the ceasefire, including maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz and the handling of Iranian assets that were recently unfrozen.

Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts elsewhere in the region have also suffered a setback. A U.S.-backed framework agreement between Lebanon and Israel, announced by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, was rejected by Hezbollah, which vowed to continue its military campaign against Israeli forces.

With military operations continuing and both Washington and Tehran accusing each other of violating the ceasefire, analysts warn that the risk of a broader regional conflict remains high. Any further escalation could disrupt global energy markets and threaten one of the world’s most critical maritime trade routes through the Strait of Hormuz.
