🦌 Why Does the Sangai Live Only at Loktak Lake?
The Sangai (Rucervus eldii eldii), also known as the Dancing Deer of Manipur, lives only in Loktak Lake because of a very rare natural habitat found nowhere else on Earth.
🌿 1. Phumdi – The Floating Land
Loktak Lake is famous for Phumdi, which are thick floating masses of vegetation, soil, and organic matter.
The Sangai has evolved to walk, rest, and feed on these floating islands. Its long and flexible legs help it balance on the soft, moving surface—something other deer cannot do.
🌾 2. Perfect Food Source
Phumdis grow native grasses and aquatic plants that form the Sangai’s natural diet.
Outside Loktak Lake, this exact combination of food does not exist, making survival impossible elsewhere.
🌊 3. Unique Water–Vegetation Balance
Loktak Lake maintains a delicate water level and ecosystem balance that keeps the Phumdis floating and alive.
Any change in water flow or depth can destroy the habitat—this is why Sangai cannot adapt to other wetlands.
🧬 4. Evolution in Isolation
Over thousands of years, the Sangai evolved only within this ecosystem.
Its body structure, hooves, and movement are specially adapted to floating ground, making it unsuitable for forests or dry land.
🏞️ 5. Keibul Lamjao National Park
The world’s only floating national park, located inside Loktak Lake, is the Sangai’s last natural refuge.
This park protects both the animal and the Phumdi ecosystem, without which the Sangai would go extinct.
⚠️ 6. Why It Cannot Live Anywhere Else
No Phumdi outside Loktak
No similar floating grassland
Cannot survive on hard or dry ground
Extremely sensitive to habitat change
Because of this, Loktak Lake is not just a home—it is the Sangai’s entire world.
🌍 Cultural Importance
The Sangai is the state animal of Manipur and a symbol of
grace
balance with nature
Manipuri identity and heritage
Protecting Loktak Lake means saving the Sangai forever.
