The Ultimate Queen of Manipuri Cinema: Remembering Huirem Seema ๐ฌโจ
Born into a rich artistic legacy, Huirem Seema (8 Nov 1970 โ 17 Sept 2011) inherited her passion from her theatre-veteran parents, Huirem Motilal Singh and Huirem Ongbi Ibeni Devi. Stepping onto the stage at just five years old with the Rupmahal Theatre, she transformed her heritage into a monumental career spanning over two decades. ๐๏ธ๐
Seema uniquely bridged three eras of Manipuri cinema, seamlessly transitioning from video formats to 35mm celluloid prints and the modern digital age. Starring in 15 celluloid films and over 100 digital movies, she won Best Actress awards for Kanaga Hinghouni and Nongju Ahing. Her exceptional talent gained national recognition when Yenning Amadi Likla and Ngaihak Lambida were selected for the prestigious Indian Panorama at IFFI. ๐๏ธ๐
Beyond acting, Seema was a creative powerhouse. Alongside her husband, noted filmmaker Laimayum Surjakanta, she launched Seema Productions (SF), producing four digital films and co-directing Yumleima Lamleima. Her voice also resonated across the region as an approved artiste for All India Radio, Imphal. ๐๏ธ๐ฌ
Though she tragically passed away at age 40, her dedication was so profound that hits like Tolenkhomba were released posthumously. Survived by her husband and two sons, Huirem Ningol Laimayum Ongbi Seema remains an eternal trailblazer of Meitei cinema. Rest in power, Queen. ๐ฏ๏ธโค๏ธ
