In a truly incredible turn of events, a 44-year-old worker named Shyambabu Sinha, who was declared dead following a coal mine explosion in Meghalaya, returned home alive yesterday, February 14, 2026.
The incident has stunned both his family and local authorities because his last rites had already been performed.
Key Details of the Incident:
The Accident: On February 5, 2026, a powerful explosion occurred at an illegal rat-hole coal mine in the Thangsku area of East Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya. The blast trapped dozens of workers; the official death toll currently stands at 31.
The Mistaken Identity: Because many bodies were severely disfigured by the blast, identification was extremely difficult. Shyambabu’s family identified a body at a hospital in Meghalaya based on specific marks (an infection on a finger and a spot on the stomach).
The Funeral: The family brought the body back to their village, Lengtapara, in the Sribhumi district of Assam, and completed the cremation and funeral rituals.
The Return: Yesterday, just as the family was finishing the post-funeral shraddha rituals, Shyambabu walked into his house. Villagers were initially terrified, thinking they were seeing a ghost, before realizing he was indeed alive.
Current Status:
While Shyambabu's family is celebrating his "miraculous" return, the incident has left a major mystery for the police. A joint investigation between Meghalaya and Assam Police has been launched to answer one critical question:
Whose body did the family actually cremate?
Authorities are now working to cross-reference the details of the unidentified deceased person with other miners still reported missing from the blast site.
