360º Island Theme Paludarium

Since there are both aquatic and terrestrial perimeters, A Paludaria can incorporate both aquatic and terrestrial plants easily within them. A wider variety of plant genera can be adopted that not only enhance the beauty of these setups but also offer functional advantage for the inhabitants of such setups. These Paludaria can range from small table-tops to large and can often be extended to entire wall modules like our 'Naturium' setup that we shared earlier. This time, however we offer you a similar setup that we personally admire a lot in our gallery.

Presenting you, our –“360º Island Paludarium”, an extra-large setup that is made not just to view but also to accommodate seating area for nature lovers to sit right in front of it.

Some of the common plants used in this setup are from the genera of Ferns, Cryptocorynes and Anubias which are mostly hardy and easy to maintain. The water-filled portion can also support many other aquatic plant species that can be grown easily provided a light of appropriate intensity is setup that support their growth.

The fish and other inhabitants like shrimps and snails find such Paludaria more natural than other types of tanks due to the additional dimensions it offers them to feel at home. And of course, these setups are a beauty to own and admire life long.

Honestly speaking, this 'Naturium' project has been a grueling research and development project for Aquascape Addicts that taught many lessons on how Nature manifests itself at different scales and environ. Our 'First Engineer Version' took us almost a couple of seasons to build from the bare bone initial research to this grandeur 'work of art'. And now with the commercially viable validation complete and research experience gained, we can now build this well within a month for any of our clients interested in this project.

As a part of learning experience, we came across several critical challenges which we solved one after the other in this project. We encountered them since its one of a kind system which is unlike other closed systems that require trapping moisture to continuously maintain humidity by enclosing the entire system. Naturium offers a breathtaking view of the entire frontal area as it is open till the bottom aquarium portion to offer a greater clarity of Nature's manifestation in a smaller scale without any compromise. Pulling off such a feat using both indigenous as well as exotic plant varieties and that too in our beloved Hyderabad's climate is more than what we could take for granted. Hence we present to you a completely open and overwhelming 'Nature Contained in a Box' that is inspired by rainforests around the world and the flora that you find there.

But a Naturium? You may ask. Well, before any eyebrows are raised, let me explain the reason behind coining this project "Naturium". Depending on the well-established definitions within the realms of hobbies, this setup technically looks like, and can be called a Paludarium. However, from my perspective a Paludarium is called so, as long as it’s a replication of a swamp. Therefore, we instead named it "Naturium" to establish and emphasize the fact that it’s purely an inspiration drawn from Nature, more specifically Rain forests. We believe you can definitely identify this by yourself that it’s just made to be named that.

Meanwhile, people elsewhere in the world prefer such setups to often house them with exotic amphibian pets. They definitely are cute pets. No offence meant, but I personally abhor creepy crawly creatures to core and hence you just see lovely fish swimming in the water in our 'Naturium' instead. Moreover, you do not put any pets other than fish in "Naturium" for the obvious fact that it’s an open system unless you own a finch that occasionally wants to perch on those drift wood branches.

We may now just see the finished product that appears flawless, but a lot of effort and contribution went into this including support of few of our best buddies and business associates. Personally, I would like to highlight the following contributions. Our own glass supplier to start with, who gave us his complete attention as well as our Man Friday 'Baba Bhai' for helping in making this unusual tank design with large dimensions. Our long term good friend and fellow hobbyist for making the rock scaffold possible and the waterfall areas within them, along with showering us with occasional gifts of rare plants he sourced during his treks. Our well-wisher and good friend for helping background scaffold that required few changes more than twice to improvise. Our business associate and a very close friend for helping me with tweaking an entirely indigenous misting equipment and invaluable suggestions and tips on various plant species. Apart from all of this, my earlier learnings helped me choose the right lighting system and automation for this entire system. The proper selection of suitable plants took me a great deal of research to figure out which species thrives in 'in vitro' vs 'in situ' environ, till carving out the final scape that enhances the depth and natural beauty of a hill side creek in a rain forest.

A very special thanks to for helping me bring this special video after countless hours of developing the concept, editing and reworking along with offering his valuable points in reaching out to all of you.
