IPOY is glad to have award winning and acclaimed photographers as the judges and we are happy to introduce our judge Raghu Rai.

Raghu Rai was awarded as the Laureate of the first edition of the Academie des beaux-arts Photography Award-2019, in a grand ceremony on 30th October’19 at the Academie- a rare honour first time being given to a photographer which was earlier meant only for literature and art.

Having published more than 55 books (almost sounds like one book a year on an average) for half a century, photographer Raghu Rai is the most revered, prolific and incisive documenter of modern India.

Rai’s relationship with the camera is almost as old as India’s relationship with independence. Born in December 1942, a turbulent time when the world’s largest democracy was still finding its feet as a free nation, it is almost a given that Rai would understand the nuances of the grass root better than any other photographer of his time.

It was this inherent need to tell the story of a young free nation – of its struggles and its perils, its triumphs and its tribulations that made Rai – a qualified civil engineer – decide to take up the medium of visual storytelling.

Rai now lives in New Delhi with his family and continues to be an associate of Magnum Photos.
