The secret weapon for realistic paintings isn’t a bright color. It’s this earthy staple. 🌾👇

Welcome to Day 11 of 30 Days 30 Colours—simplifying watercolours, one pigment at a time! Today we are decoding Yellow Ochre (PY42) from Thoovi Arts.

Unlike synthetic, high-chroma yellows that can look harsh or neon, Yellow Ochre is a natural earth pigment. It brings an instant, muted warmth that creates perfect tonal harmony in landscapes, portraits, and architectural studies.

🧪 The Pigment Profile:
👉Soft Golden Washes: When heavily diluted, it yields luminous, soft washes—perfect for skin undertones, sunlit backgrounds, and dry foliage.
👉Believable Structure: Painted thickly, it deepens into rich ochre-browns, adding realistic value and shadow without making your mix look muddy or overpowered.
👉Palette Moderation: As an opaque pigment with strong permanence, it’s incredible for underpaintings. Use it to effortlessly tone down loud, bright colors.

Watch how this single earth pigment transitions from airy layers to dense, textured warmth on this mini bookmark study.

If you love slow art and intentional color mastery, hit follow! ✨

The secret to realistic greens? Stop mixing them from scratch. 🌿👇

If your landscape paintings always end up looking a bit too neon or muddy, meet Hooker’s Green. It takes away the absolute guesswork of mixing foliage, transitioning seamlessly from soft morning light to dense, rich woods.

Swatched here using my favorite formulation from .arts. It holds its clarity beautifully, whether it’s a sheer wash or a deep, moody layer.

Are you actually controlling your palette, or is it controlling you? 🎨✨

I’m diving back into our 30 Days 30 Colours exploration with a quick recap of the first three days!
If you’re ready to stop guessing how your paints will mix and start creating with true confidence, you are in the right place.

Instead of just making standard color charts, we are using these mini monochromatic mountain landscapes to test how each individual professional pigment handles layers, values, and atmosphere.

Here is what the first three days with these shades taught us:
💙 Day 1: Phthalo Blue (PB15) – An incredibly intense, vibrant shade. Because this specific formulation grips the paper fibers almost instantly, it forces you to map out your light and dark values with absolute care from the very first wash.
💚 Day 2: Hooker’s Green (PG7, PY110, PY150) – A beautifully clear landscape staple. It takes away the guesswork of mixing a realistic foliage green from scratch, transitioning seamlessly from soft morning light to dense, rich woods.
🖤 Day 3: Payne’s Grey (PBk6, PB15, PR122) – A cool-leaning alternative to flat darks. It is perfect for building smoky mists and heavy shadows while keeping your overall painting looking crisp and full of life
