🎭 Introducing the Playwright and Director of Vanapuri Vaathukaaran.

Naren is a theatre artist, director, and Parai artist based in Bengaluru. Growing up among Parai artists, he began performing across Tamil Nadu.
He has worked across theatre productions as an actor and music composer, and teaches performance with a focus on social engagement. He has also worked at Srishti Manipal as an interim faculty member, developing and teaching a curriculum titled Sonic Lineage during the winter semester.
He is the founder of ADAVI Arts Collective, an anti-caste initiative that bridges traditional folk practices—centered around Parai—with contemporary artistic expression, bringing together artists to celebrate community, cultural continuity, and socially engaged performance.

On this May Day, Vanapuri Vaathukaaran speaks about art labour.

Direction, Script, Design - Naren

In traditional theatre, for decades, there has been an unspoken hierarchy in how characters are assigned—where roles reflect social power instead of being freely given. Kings are often portrayed by dominant castes, embodying authority, while clowns and even female roles are pushed onto marginalised communities.

Who gets to represent power on stage?
And who is confined to be laughed at?

The clown, shaped by stereotype—exaggerated, mocked, dismissed—has long been denied depth.

Vanapuri Vaathukaaran challenges this.
Here, the clown is not just comic relief, but conscious, sharp, and aware—breaking imposed roles and reclaiming space for dignity, complexity, and truth.

Arputhan is an aspiring filmmaker from Erode driven to tell stories rooted in everyday life and lived experiences. He is also a folk and gaana singer, and a full-time Parai artist with ADAVI Arts Collective. Through his performances, he brings together music, rhythm, and storytelling, and has performed across India at various art festivals, engaging diverse audiences through folk expression
