Today is Rakhri/Raksha Bandan.... now if you want to celebrate it by all means do continue to celebrate your bond with your siblings. However this image which circulates around is something which has been distorted for commercial gain and never happened within Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s time nor was endorsed by him or any of the Guru’s.

It’s important that we don’t distort history for commercial gain or social media acceptance. Rakhri/Rakhi/Raksha is a cultural celebration which over time commercial companies have started to associate it with religion which is far from the truth.

There are many stories whereby Guru Nanak Dev Ji challenged Hindu Pandits who would offer strings for his protection and he would question how, why and relevance. When he was told that only men are allowed and not women to which he would reply if you put one on my sister, then only then will I wear one. This was Guru Nanak who educated the world about equality and not being attached to meaningless rituals.
