Cinemates Film Club is proud to launch Critical Cut, a new series dedicated to student voices in cinema.

This platform will feature film reviews, critical essays, analytical articles, and other cinema-related writings by our members. Through Critical Cut, students will have the opportunity to engage deeply with films and express their perspectives on cinema as an art form, a cultural force, and a medium of storytelling.

Selected writings will be published on the official Instagram and pages of Cinemates Film Club.

We watched his creation beg for love and call it monstrous.
Then we sat in a room and argued about who was right.

That's Cinemates.

Some stories don't haunt you because they're scary. They haunt you because they're true.

Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein at nineteen — not as a horror story, but as a question: what does a creator owe the thing they bring into the world? Guillermo del Toro has spent a lifetime circling that question, and now he's answered it in his own image.

This Friday, Cinemates sits down with Frankenstein — a film about longing, abandonment, and what it means to be made rather than born. We'll watch it together, and then we'll talk — about del Toro's vision, about Shelley's original grief, about the thin line the film walks between monster and man.

There is a shot in Charulata where she watches the world through a pair of binoculars from behind a latticed window — close enough to see everything, too far to touch any of it. Satyajit Ray spent a career finding those shots. The ones that don't explain, that don't underline. That simply hold.

Yesterday marks 104 years since he was born in Calcutta. We made this for him — not an obituary, not a list of achievements, but eight films and what they still ask of us.

27th April 2026, Bohagor Duporiya came alive with warmth, culture spirit again!! Organized by the Cinemates Film Club, Department of Communication & Journalism, in association with Pitch Room AD & PR Club and driven by the energy of enthusiast students, the event celebrated the essence of Bohag in a truly vibrant way.

The afternoon unfolded with lively games and quizzes, soulful songs by students, traditional Husori performed by the boys, and vibrant Jeng Bihu by the girls—bringing the true spirit of Rongali Bihu to life.

The celebration concluded on a sweet and authentic note with Doi and Sira, leaving everyone with memories of togetherness, joy, and cultural pride.
