When Khwaja Ahmed Abbas published SARDARJI, he was met with praise, outrage, a court case—and support from Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Set in post-Partition Delhi, where mayhem and violence, Abbas depicted the dangers of a society where a neighbour turns against a neighbour. Watch perform SARDARJI—a tale about a Muslim man and his arch nemesis neighbour, a Sikh.
In India, the road to justice has always been long and winding. What happens when a poor Muslim man, accused of murdering a Hindu, must tread it? A riot-swallowed city, where hate has reared its ugly head, is believed to be the scene of a communally-charged crime. But as the protagonist’s confession reveals, it may not be an open-and-shut case after all!
Lust, deceit, a mystery woman—this is Sa’adat Hasan Manto’s PADHIYE KALMA, enacted by tomorrow and day after.
