India is positioning itself as the Organic Food Basket of the World — and at BIOFACH 2026 (10–13 February, Nuremberg), that ambition takes centre stage! As the Country of the Year, India is not just participating, it is at the heart of the world’s most influential organic trade event.

The India Pavilion, organised by the The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, brings together exhibitors from 20+ States and Union Territories. The delegation is led by Shri Rajesh Agrawal IAS, Commerce Secretary, Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, underscoring the Government’s strong push to scale organic exports globally.

A key focus this year is the promotion of India’s NPOP (National Programme for Organic Production) certification, reinforcing credibility, traceability, and the complete soil-to-soul journey for EU buyers and global importers.

Earthful.me, one of India’s emerging clean-label and plant-based nutrition brands, has raised ₹26 crore in a pre-Series A round. The funding marks a strong validation of India's fast-growing women’s health and functional nutrition space; a category Earthful is actively shaping through science-backed, transparent and holistic formulations.

Founded by Veda G. and Sai Sudha Gogineni, Earthful is known for pioneering products like India’s first menopausal multivitamin, while also offering targeted solutions across daily nutrition, plant proteins, and wellness for skin, hair and sleep.

With the new investment, Earthful plans to scale its women’s health portfolio, strengthen teams across Hyderabad and Mumbai, and accelerate product development and brand outreach. This growth reflects a bigger shift in India’s organic and clean-label landscape where trust, transparency and purpose-driven innovation are becoming decisive factors for consumers.

Organic Packaged Foods: Healthy Choice or Health Halo?

As organic products move from niche shelves to mainstream retail, consumers increasingly equate “organic” with healthier eating especially for snacks aimed at families and children. But as Functional & Clinical Dietitian Swati Dhingra Chawla (Founder, Nutrition Garage) explains, the organic label reflects farming practices, not nutritional quality. An organic cookie made with organic maida, organic sugar and organic oil is still a cookie often high in fat, low in fibre and nearly identical in nutrient profile to its conventional counterpart. While organic ingredients reduce synthetic pesticide exposure and support cleaner agriculture, the calorie, sugar and sodium levels in packaged organic treats can mirror those of regular junk food.

The bigger challenge lies in consumer perception. The “health halo” around the organic tag leads people to pay more, eat more, and overlook labels, assuming these foods are guilt-free. Studies show shoppers consume up to 44% more of snacks labelled “organic,” despite similar nutritional risks. As Swati emphasises, mindful eating begins with reading ingredients, checking fibre and protein levels, and choosing minimally processed foods organic or otherwise. Organic farming supports soil, ecosystems and welfare, but when it comes to packaged foods, nutrition still depends on formulation, not the label.

🌱 BIOFACH INDIA | Industry News Update

India has signaled a major leap for its organic sector by setting a USD 2 billion organic-food export target for 2030, backed by strong production growth and rising global demand. This momentum was on full display at the first Northeast Organic Week in Shillong, hosted by The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), where policymakers, FPOs, exporters and international buyers convened to spotlight the Northeast’s unique organic strengths from Lakadong turmeric and ginger to pineapple, tea and orchids.

With India’s organic output rising from 1.34 million tonnes in 2015–16 to 4.70 million tonnes in 2024–25, and exports tripling over the past decade, the direction is clear: India is gearing up to become a high-trust, high-value global supplier of certified organic foods.

The focus on certification, traceability, buyer–seller engagement and FPO capacity building directly strengthens India’s export readiness especially for regions like the Northeast with distinct origin-based products. As APEDA aligns policy, market access and global outreach, new opportunities are emerging across processing, packaging, cold chain, traceability solutions and premium organic ingredients. The path ahead is one of scale, credibility and global visibility for India’s organic ecosystem.
