For the first time, a traditional Sherdukpen folk song has been recorded and filmed live in the hills of Jigaon village near Shergaon, Arunachal Pradesh. "O Male O Gi La" was documented by teacher and folk artist Rinchin Norbu Thongchi & musician Jim Ankan Deka, preserving the song in the very landscape where it has echoed through generations.

'O Male O Gi La' is one of the slowly disappearing folk songs of the Sherdukpen community, with only a handful of traditional singers able to perform it today. More than just a song, it is a prayer for compassion, purity and harmony. It reminds us that our thoughts, words and actions should be guided by kindness, that every gathering is sacred, every song is a prayer and every dance is a blessing. Through imagery of the sun, the mountains, karma and the Snow Lion, the song reflects the Sherdukpen people's deep spiritual connection with nature, community and their ancestral way of life.

The song is performed by Rinchin Norbu Thongchi, a teacher from Jigaon and one of the most respected custodians of Sherdukpen folk traditions. Widely regarded as a guru of Sherdukpen folk music, he has devoted his life to preserving traditional songs, stories and oral knowledge that have been passed down through generations. As these traditions face the risk of being forgotten, his knowledge has become an invaluable cultural treasure for the Sherdukpen community.

This documentation was made possible through the wholehearted support of the people of Shergaon. Special thanks to NGawang Thungon of Taksar Lu Farms, documentary filmmaker Tse Ring La and epidemiologist Gombu Tsering Thungon for their invaluable support, resources and encouragement in making this live recording and film possible.

This project is part of the ongoing efforts of OK North East and Music Malt to document, archive, and preserve the folk traditions, indigenous music, and oral heritage of North East India, ensuring that these priceless cultural treasures continue to inspire future generations.

"Mento Ngangong" is a traditional Monpa folk song from Arunachal Pradesh, beautifully rendered by folk singer Pema Yangzom from Domkho village near Morshing, Arunachal Pradesh.

One of the oldest songs of the region, Mento Ngangong celebrates the beauty of nature, the hills, and the vibrant colours of the landscape. The lyrics praise the flowers that bloom across the mountains, from the white magnolia to the red and pink rhododendrons, reflecting the harmony and richness of the natural world. Through simple yet evocative imagery, the song expresses a deep connection between people, nature, and the land they call home.

This recording is part of an ongoing effort by OK North East to document and preserve the folk traditions and cultural heritage of Northeast India.
