The Kochi-Muziris Biennale is India's first biennale, held in spaces across Kochi, the Muziris region and surrounding islands. Shows are held in existing galleries and halls, and site-specific installations take place in public spaces, heritage buildings and disused structures. Artist from across Asia and the world will exhibit work in a variety of mediums including film, installation, painting, s

culpture, new media and performance art. Through the celebration of contemporary art from around the world, The Kochi-Muziris Biennale seeks to invoke the historic and cosmopolitan legacy of the modern metropolis of Kochi, and its mythical predecessor, the ancient port of Muziris. Alongside the exhibition the Biennale offers a rich programme of talks, seminars, screenings, music, workshops and educational activities for school children and students of all ages.

Join us for our next Let’s Talk session titled “Bridges of Hesitation”, featuring acclaimed artist Anju Dodiya on 20 August at 11:00 AM at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda.

Known for her fictional self-portraits, Dodiya reflects on the act of creation through deeply introspective imagery that moves between memory, vulnerability, and the shifting self. Drawing from poetry, miniature painting, Renaissance art, Japanese Ukiyo-e prints, and cinema, her practice unfolds across watercolour, charcoal, fabric, and found surfaces.

This programme is presented by Kirloskar and is supported by the Faculty of Fine Arts, The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda.

Seeds of Continuity | Students’ Biennale: Revisited

Seeds of Continuity by Ashis Kumar Budek, Basudeba Behera, Bhimasen Biswal, Gatikrushna Naik, Chittaranjan Mohanta, and Sanjana Sahoo (Utkal University of Culture, Odisha) is an immersive installation rooted in the rice culture and shared kitchen traditions of mid-western Odisha. Reconstructed through bamboo, rice husk, paddy straw, clay, terracotta, wooden farming tools, seeds, and organic grains, the temporary site evokes the intimacy of rural hearths where food is prepared, knowledge is exchanged, stories unfold, and communal bonds are sustained.

Sound recordings, video documentation, and tactile elements offer a sensorial passage into cycles of cultivation, harvest, celebration, and everyday sustenance. A central hearth anchors the installation, symbolising nourishment, resilience, and warmth. By inviting viewers to touch grains, smell straw, witness cooking practices, and engage with Indigenous food traditions, the work becomes a living archive of memory, food sovereignty, and ecological wisdom.

Through this, the installation asks how traditional food rituals endure and what seeds of culture are carried forward into the future.

Join us for our next Let’s Talk session titled, “Archives of Resistance”, a conversation featuring Yumna Al-Arashi and Prarthna Singh on 13 August at 3:00 PM at the School of Environment and Architecture, Mumbai.

Through a conversation around their monographs Aisha and Har Shaam Shaheen Bagh: One Hundred Days of Resistance, the artists reflect on photography, memory, identity, and the ways women are represented in personal and shared public experiences.

This programme is presented by Kirloskar and is supported by Pro Helvetia New Delhi, and the Swiss Arts Council.

Blind Command | Students’ Biennale: Revisited

Blind Command by A4 Collective — Gargi Kumawat, Lalchand Prajapat, Priyanka Kumari Meena, and Yash Songara (Rajasthan School of Art) begins with the chair, not as furniture, but as an architecture of authority.

In classrooms, offices, and bureaucratic corridors, the chair becomes a quiet instrument of hierarchy: who sits above, who waits below, who is made to stand, who is asked to disappear. From lived experience, the chair becomes a site where distance is produced between power and student, intention and indifference, presence and neglect. Yet the issues extend beyond any single institution; they echo through spaces where enthusiasm falters and authority settles comfortably into its elevated seat.

Through reconfiguring, unsettling and reimagining chairs, the work practices a small act of disobedience. It refuses the spatial scripts that determine where bodies belong, how knowledge circulates, and who is allowed to speak. By shifting the chair from a symbol to a material inquiry, the installation invites viewers to confront the structures they inhabit daily and sense the possibility of sitting, standing, or rising otherwise.

Curated by Savyasachi Anju Prabir, the work was on view at St. Andrews Parish Hall, Fort Kochi.

This Monday, 27 July, we welcomed Sepake Angiama, the Artistic Director of Iniva and co-curator of the 3rd edition of the Chicago Architecture Biennial, to a Let’s Talk session at CEPT University, Ahmedabad, moderated by Mario D’Souza, Director of Programmes, KBF.

Titled “How to Curate an Architecture Biennial…And Other Such Stories,” the conversation reflected on Angiama’s curatorial practice and the making of the biennial. Tracing the histories of modernist architecture in Chicago, she examined how architectural modernism often contributed to the erasure of Indigenous histories and ways of inhabiting space. Drawing on the work of DAAR (Decolonizing Architecture Art Residency) and MSTC (Movimento Sem Teto do Centro), she discussed the importance of understanding the histories embedded within buildings, working collaboratively with communities to reimagine neighbourhoods, and reclaiming abandoned buildings and urban spaces through collective engagement.

Angiama also proposed expanded ways of engaging with architecture through performance, sound, and embodied spatial experience, moving beyond conventional architectural representations such as floor plans and models. She raised broader questions about the biennial as a catalyst for activating cities, the afterlives of buildings and public spaces once a biennial concludes, and the challenges of curating exhibitions that critically engage with architecture and the built environment itself.

Join us for Landscape Language, a Let’s Talk programme featuring visual artists Urgain Zawa and Stanzin Samphel in conversation with Ananthan Suresh, heritage practitioner and Programme Manager, KMB, on 6 August at 5:00 PM at the Ladakh Arts and Media Organisation (LAMO), Leh. Bringing together artistic practices rooted in the landscapes and cultural histories of Ladakh, the conversation will explore ecology, cultural memory, vernacular knowledge systems, migration, heritage, and the region's rapidly changing social and ecological realities.

The event is organised in collaboration with the Ladakh Arts and Media Organisation (LAMO) and is supported by Kirloskar. All are welcome.

Reppandee Lepcha, one of the recipients of the TATA Trusts Students’ Biennale National Awards 2025–26, recently concluded her residency at the Kochi Biennale Foundation. During her residency at SMS Hall, Mattancherry, Lepcha developed “Broken Symphony”, a mixed-media series that examines how identities are shaped through language.

Drawing on the experiences of the Lepcha community, the project interrogates labels imposed by external systems and imagines their gradual removal through the symbolic force of water. As these inherited narratives dissolve, the work makes space for identities that are claimed rather than assigned, allowing the community’s own voice and self-definition to emerge.

Following the residency, Reppandee visited the studios of KMB 2025–26 artist Sujith S.N. and Jithinlal N.R., artist and Head of the Department (HOD) and Lecturer in Painting at RLV College of Music and Fine Arts.

Join us for the next Let’s Talk session, at CEPT University, Ahmedabad, featuring curator, educator, and Iniva (London) Artistic Director Sepake Angiama on 27 July at 6:30 PM. Reflecting on her experience co-curating the 3rd edition of the Chicago Architecture Biennial, Angiama will share insights from her curatorial practice, and will explore what it means to spatialise pedagogy and view architecture as an expanded field of cultural production. The session will be moderated by Mario D’Souza, Director of Programmes, Kochi Biennale Foundation.

Durgesh Prajapati, one of the recipients of the TATA Trusts Students’ Biennale National Awards 2025–26, recently concluded his residency at the Kochi Biennale Foundation. During his residency at SMS Hall, Mattancherry, Prajapati developed “Space = Geography”, a project rooted in field research and site visits across Kochi.

Using clay as his primary medium, the project documents the changing social, economic, ecological, and cultural landscapes of everyday life. Through his engagement with traditional artisans, migrants, women, and local communities, Prajapati’s work brings to light the often-unseen stories embedded within places, materials, and craft traditions.

Revisiting the 6th Edition of the KMB, we take you to Armaan Collective & Café, on Mattancherry’s historic Bazaar Road, which served as one of the venues for Edam, a curated exhibition by the Kochi Biennale Foundation. Showcasing the diverse artistic practices and the rich artistic imagination of Kerala, Edam is KBF’s gesture of gratitude to the home state that continues to sustain and inspire it. The latest edition of the segment was curated by Aishwarya Suresh and K. M. Madhusudhanan.
