A distinguished voice in Contemporary Abstract Expressionism, Kavita Jaiswal has been shaping her practice since the 1980s across painting, works on paper, photography, and video art. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at the National Gallery of Modern Art, Christie’s South Asian Art (London), UNESCO’s Power of Peace, and the Chelsea International Art Exhibition (New York). It is held in major public and private collections, including the British Museum, Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, NGMA, and the Alkazi Collection.

We are delighted to welcome Ashu Gupta to the Studio Art family.

Based in Bengaluru, Ashu Gupta’s practice unfolds through the quiet discipline of pen and ink and the meditative process of paper piercing.
Rooted in observation and memory, her works explore the emotional weight of domestic spaces, old houses, overlooked objects, roots, and silence.
Built through thousands of slow, repetitive gestures, each mark and puncture becomes a record of time, attention, and presence.
Her delicate surfaces invite us to pause, look closely, and discover the extraordinary within the everyday.

What remains when everything unnecessary falls away?
Studio Art presents The Quiet Surface, bringing together six artists whose practices explore paper as a space for memory, gesture, presence and transformation.
Through drawing, layering, piercing, folding, marking and erasure, the surface becomes more than what we see. It holds what is remembered, what is restrained, what is revealed—and what remains quietly beneath.

SACHIN TEKADE | GRIDS OF SILENCE — II

Where structure meets silence, light reveals what remains.
Through Grids of Silence, Sachin Tekade maps a shifting terrain where the grid becomes a metaphor for structure, control and urban order — an echo of planning, replacement and the continual transformation of the city. In contrast, the line traces what slips through that order: moments of light, life, gesture and memory.

Working with paper through folding, cutting and layering, Tekade’s process is both meditative and precise. There is surrender within discipline, and creation within erasure. Light becomes an active medium — revealing, altering and giving form to change.

Sometimes, all it takes is a few words to begin looking a little closer.

Something about lines.
Something about paper.
Something about stillness.
Something about memory.
Something about thread.

Every artist begins with a material, but what emerges is a way of seeing the world.

At Studio Art, these “somethings” become conversations—between process and intuition, material and meaning, the artist and the viewer.

A day well spent in Kolkata.

Visited the studios of Jayeti Bhattacharya and Prasanta Ghosh, where I was welcomed with incredible warmth, wonderful conversation, and the most delicious home-cooked Bengali meal.

What stayed with me most, though, was witnessing two artists who are each evolving with remarkable clarity and conviction. It is always a privilege to see a practice in motion—to watch ideas deepen, confidence grow, and a visual language become more distilled over time.

The works are taking beautiful shape, carrying both sensitivity and strength. There is something deeply rewarding about walking alongside artists on this journey, seeing not only the artworks transform, but also the people behind them.

Looking forward to sharing what lies ahead.

Prasanta Ghosh’s practice examines how language and architecture—often considered neutral systems—act as powerful tools that shape identity, inclusion, and mobility in contemporary society.

Language becomes a space of tension: a means of expression, but also a site of exclusion and hierarchy. Architecture, meanwhile, reflects and reinforces social order, access, and control. Ghosh’s practice is rooted in observation and personal storytelling, often positioning himself as a listener, observer, or orator within the work. Each piece invites viewers to engage with layered truths—of displacement, power, and the precarious act of existing between lines and walls, both literal and symbolic.

Sachin Tekade Studio Visit ; Every fold opens a new possibility.
Where does an idea begin? Sometimes, it starts with something as simple as a sheet of paper.

In his practice, Sachin Tekade transforms paper through acts of folding, cutting, layering, and repetition—allowing form to emerge through play, intuition, and careful observation. His works often draw inspiration from the built environment, where nature and construction exist in constant dialogue. Tiny openings, shifting geometries, and intricate structures become reminders of the windows, pathways, and possibilities hidden within everyday spaces.

For Sachin, paper is not merely a material—it is a field of exploration, where ideas are discovered rather than imposed.
