Ghoomar is a traditional folk dance of Rajasthan, India and Sindh‚ Pakistan. Ghoomar was developed by the Bhil tribe and was then adopted by other Rajasthani communities. It is performed by women in swirling robes, and accompanied by men and women singing together

This folk dance gets its name from ‘ghoomna’, the pirouetting which displays the spectacular colors of the flowing ‘ghaghara’, the long skirt of the Rajasthani women. There is an amazing grace as the skirts flair slowly while the women twirl in circles, their faces covered with the help of veils.

They use measured steps and various graceful inclinations of the body, beating palms or snapping fingers at particular cadences while singing lilting songs. Mostly Goddess Saraswati is worshiped during this dance. This dance is usually done in a circle.

Pavri Nach is an exclusive preserve of this tribe. The dance derives its name from the musical instrument ‘Tarpha’ or ‘Pavri’. Tarpha is a wind instrument, locally made of dried gourd. Both men and women participate in the performance, though forming separate groups.

The Pavri Nach is performed in tight physical formation, wherein the artists hold each other by the waist, up close. They make various complicated formations during the display of the dance. This dance form requires great set of skills, energy and efficiency from the participants. The main concentration of the dance is on the foot movements of the artists. It is not only a group dance, but also a solo acrobatic dance form. The men of the tribe perform the Pavri Nach in a group separately also or in solo. This male vigor consists of forming a human pyramid or revolving a dancer on a stout pole!
