As a student of psychology, I have always been intrigued by the dark side of the human mind. What gets a person to be evil, revengeful to the point of committing heinous crimes. Sharing trivia about 2 Scottish 'gentleman' notorious for their crimes.
1) George Mackenzie was an intellectual, a lawyer that many in Scotland looked up to. In a bid to curb the rise of the rebellious Covenanters ; Mackenzie had them jailed, tortured and executed earning him the title of ' bloody Mackenzie '. This is his haunted grave. Stories abound that Mackenzie's macabre shadow continues to haunt the graveyard.
2) Deacon Brodie was a man of repute in Edinburgh in the 18th century. He was a master carpenter, locksmith, a municipal councillor by day. He was a thief by night robbing banks and the rich.No one suspected a locksmith of such crimes and he got away 'Scot free' for a long time. When his dark side was exposed he was publicly hanged. This pub in his name is a quote popular among locals and tourists.
Robert Louis Stevenson' novel, Jekyll and Hyde was inspired by this real life character.
