A new report by the Central Ground Water Board has revealed a worrying rise in uranium contamination in Delhi’s groundwater. According to the 2025 assessment, 13–15% of tested samples contain uranium above the safe limit of 30 ppb, placing Delhi third after Punjab and Haryana in overall contamination. Multiple districts, including North, North West, South, South East, South West, and West, have recorded unsafe levels. Environmental groups are demanding clearer data and better treatment protocols, warning that uranium combined with nitrate, fluoride, and high salinity poses severe health risks. Long-term exposure can damage kidneys, weaken bones, affect children’s growth, and slightly increase cancer risk. Hotspot areas like Auchandi and Nizampur show rising levels, adding to public safety concerns.
