Nature Morte is a contemporary art gallery showcasing experimental forms of art; championing conceptual, lens-based, and installation genres.

Founded in New York's East Village in 1982 and closed in 1988, Peter Nagy revived Nature Morte in New Delhi in 1997 as a commercial gallery and a curatorial experiment. Since then, Nature Morte has become synonymous in India with challenging and experimental forms of art; championing conceptual, lens-based, and installation genres and representing a generation of Indian artists who have gone on to

international exposure. Nature Morte was the first gallery from India to be included in the most important international art fairs (starting with The Armory Show in New York in 2005) and has participated in Art Basel, Fiac Paris, Art Basel Miami Beach, Paris Photo, Art Dubai, Tokyo Art Fair, Art Basel Hong Kong, Abu Dhabi Art Fair and Frieze New York, among others. Nature Morte has also organized projects and exhibitions with international artists coming to India and combining their works with those of Indian artists to foster cross-cultural communications. In addition to its own programming, Nature Morte has collaborated with institutions in India such as the British Council, the Alliance Francais, the Sanskriti Foundation, the India International Centre, the India Habitat Centre, Max Mueller Bhavan, the Italian Cultural Center, Khoj International Artists Association, the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum, and the National Gallery of Modern Art in both New Delhi and Mumbai. Today, Nature Morte represents such well-known artists as Subodh Gupta, Jitish Kallat, Anita Dube, Mithu Sen, Bharti Kher, Imran Qureshi, Mona Rai, Pushpamala N., Seher Shah, Thukral & Tagra, Raqs Media Collective, and Asim Waqif, as well as others.

𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟯-𝟮𝟰, 𝟮𝟬𝟬𝟱

𝗝𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗞𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗮𝘁 (Jitish Kallat) has spoken of his work as being made from “many focal lengths,” the intimate and the immense, held in the same frame. 𝙍𝙞𝙘𝙠𝙨𝙝𝙖𝙬𝙥𝙤𝙡𝙞𝙨 worked at the scale of the city itself.

Drawing on a childhood spent navigating Mumbai’s density, its traffic, its crowds, its constant negotiation between chaos and survival, Kallat rendered the city as a living organism, forever expanding and colliding with itself. The two gargoyle sculptures that hold up the painting are replicas from the very railway terminus that carries millions through the city each day: a structure Kallat would have known intimately, long before it became art.

𝙍𝙞𝙘𝙠𝙨𝙝𝙖𝙬𝙥𝙤𝙡𝙞𝙨 was never really about traffic. It was about what it means to belong to a city that never stops moving.

The commonplace is rarely ordinary in 𝗕𝗵𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶 𝗞𝗵𝗲𝗿’s () world.

For 𝘽𝙞𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘿𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙢 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙔𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙒𝙖𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙇𝙞𝙛𝙚, presented at Nature Morte in 2013, familiar forms were pulled out of their everyday lives and given another kind of existence. A staircase, a doorway, a chair: fragments of the home became objects of uncertainty, carrying psychological traces while resisting any fixed meanings.

The exhibition brought this transformation into dialogue with Kher’s bindi works, where a single, intimate mark expands through repetition into something monumental. Applied across shattered mirrors or arranged in intricate geometric fields, the bindis become pattern, surface, image, and residue all at once.

We are pleased to announce the participation of Neeraj Patel (_neeraj32187) in the exhibition 𝙒𝙤𝙧𝙡𝙙𝙨 𝙒𝙞𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣 𝘾𝙡𝙤𝙩𝙝: 𝙉𝙚𝙬 𝙊𝙧𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙒𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙣 𝙈𝙖𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜, now on view at the 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗿𝗮𝗳𝘁𝘀 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘂𝗺, New Delhi (National Crafts Museum & Hastkala Academy).

Created in collaboration with 𝗝𝗮𝗶𝗽𝘂𝗿 𝗥𝘂𝗴𝘀 (Jaipur Rugs), Patel’s work considers how the act of making can carry histories, knowledge and cultural memory, while opening these traditions to new forms of experimentation. His work participates in a wider conversation around the evolving possibilities of handloom and contemporary textile practice in India.

Curated by Sreyansi Singh (Sreyansi Singh) and presented by the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handlooms), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India (Ministry of Textiles), the exhibition brings together artists, designers and craft collectives working with contemporary approaches to textiles and weaving.

As Nature Morte enters its 30th year of exhibitions and related activities in New Delhi, we are pleased to announce our new permanent home at 𝗔𝟵 𝗚𝘂𝗹𝗺𝗼𝗵𝗮𝗿 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗸, on Siri Fort Road.

Just eight buildings from A1 Neeti Bagh, where the gallery spent 17 years, this new space returns us to a neighbourhood deeply woven into Nature Morte’s history.

Much has changed over three decades. We look forward to welcoming you to our next chapter. ✨

An exhibition can evolve as it continues.

Following its presentation in New Delhi, “Shapes of Time II” arrives at Nature Morte, Mumbai, bringing together artists whose practices are shaped by repetition, observation, material, and the slow evolution of an idea.

By bringing together painting, sculpture, installation, and mixed media, the exhibition reflects on time not as something fixed, but as something continually formed through making, looking, and lived experience. In its new setting, the works invite fresh encounters while continuing the conversation they first began.

Now on view at Nature Morte, Mumbai until 5 September 2026.
